After weeks of anticipation, NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros Games have finally revealed Mortal Kombat 1. The game, which is a reboot of the long-running franchise, is set in a universe recreated by Fire God Liu Kang, featuring reimagined characters and a host of new features.

As with previous NetherRealm titles, Mortal Kombat 1 will feature unique gameplay components alongside its cinematic story mode. Mortal Kombat X introduced a variation system that allowed players to customize character loadouts, while Injustice 2 incorporated custom gear pieces that altered character stats in different ways. Mortal Kombat 11 expanded on this gear system, allowing for even greater player expression through character customization. It appears that Mortal Kombat 1 will continue this tradition with its own distinct gameplay mechanics.

Warner Bros Games has recently unveiled the Kameo Fighter System for Mortal Kombat 1, which introduces a fresh and exciting concept for players. The system features a unique roster of partner characters, known as Kameo Fighters, who can be summoned to provide assistance during matches. While the press release doesn't provide much information, it appears that the system is similar to Marvel Vs Capcom, where players can call in an NPC ally for support.

NeatherRealm's Chief Creative Officer and Mortal Kombat Co-Founder Ed Boon, has confirmed that they will be showcasing a new mechanic soon, but stopped short of providing further details. Along with this announcement, a Premium and Kollector's Edition of Mortal Kombat 1 were also revealed, and players will receive five new Kameo Fighters as a bonus post-launch. It is evident that in addition to expanding the playable roster, new Kameo Fighters are also being planned as DLC.

In fighting games, the character roster is a highly debated topic among fans. For Mortal Kombat 1, fans have been speculating not only about which legacy characters will make a comeback, but recent leaks have also confirmed some intriguing guest characters. Although it has not been officially announced, leaks suggest that Homelander, Conan the Barbarian, and DC's Peacemaker will be joining the roster at some point. Considering NetherRealm's track record with guest characters, this possibility is not far-fetched.

Mortal Kombat 1 launches September 19 for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X.
