Scorpion, the iconic character in video games, has become synonymous with the Mortal Kombat franchise. Alongside his eternal rival, Sub Zero, he has become the face of the series. In the last three decades, Mortal Kombat has thrived and continued to grow, and Scorpion has remained a central figure in its success.
Regardless of the game's quality or his role in the storyline, Scorpion has always been a significant character with captivating narratives, exceptional voice acting, and striking design. Most importantly, he is consistently enjoyable to play with his signature "GET OVER HERE" spear move, aerial attacks, and more recently, his versatile strike and throw techniques. Scorpion retains his relevance and importance throughout. As the leader of the Shirai Ryu, he has undergone numerous iterations, and here are some of the finest examples.
7 Mortal Kombat: Deception
Scorpion's design in Deception is absolutely badass. In terms of gameplay, this is by far his best performance in the MidWay Mortal Kombat games. Continuing from his storyline in Deadly Alliance, Scorpion may not be a major character, but he always manages to find himself in the midst of significant story moments. He witnesses the epic battle between Raiden and Onaga and is even chosen by the Elder Gods as their champion. However, it is worth noting that despite these accomplishments, Scorpion's role in Deception is relatively insignificant. This speaks volumes about just how exceptional some of his other iterations have been.
6 Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance
The iteration of Scorpion in Deadly Alliance is highly regarded as one of the coolest, and the anticipation for the new Deadly Alliance skin in Mortal Kombat 1 reflects that excitement. This version of Scorpion not only showcases a captivating design, but also offers enjoyable gameplay. However, when it comes to the character itself, things are not as straightforward.
Although Scorpion's role in the story is not significant, the essence of vengeance consumes him, fueling his anger to its peak. Throughout the game, Scorpion dedicates most of his efforts to pursuing Quan Chi in order to seek revenge for his family and clan. In terms of power, Scorpion proves to be incredibly formidable, capable of matching both Quan Chi and Shang Tsung. Nevertheless, his ending, where he is unexpectedly ambushed and defeated by Drahmin and Moloch, introduces a touch of humor. Additionally, the character may come across as somewhat one-dimensional.
5 Mortal Kombat: Armageddon
In Armageddon, Hanzo Hasashi, known as Scorpion, regains his vengeful and enraged nature that fans adore. He experiences a betrayal by the Elder Gods, who bring back his family and clan as undead specters. Fueled by anger, Scorpion aligns himself with the villains and comes close to succeeding until he is ultimately defeated by Sub Zero. It is worth mentioning that his tower ending is noteworthy.
However, one aspect that disappoints in this version of Scorpion is his design and costumes, which appear somewhat questionable compared to the other iterations featured in the game. Although MK11 showcases a remarkable Armageddon-inspired redesign, it does come across as slightly goofy in this particular game.
4 Mortal Kombat 9
Netherrealm Studios went all out in their efforts to revitalize the Mortal Kombat franchise with Mortal Kombat 9. Interestingly, a significant amount of emphasis was placed on the Mortal Kombat ninjas, with a particular focus on Scorpion.
This game comprehensively explores the entire story arc of Scorpion in one go. Throughout the game, he is depicted as both an anti-hero and a somewhat foolish villain. His decision to align himself with Quan Chi raises doubts about his judgement. Nevertheless, Scorpion in this installment boasts a captivating new design, embracing symbolism associated with his namesake. Additionally, players can enjoy a multitude of entertaining combos at their disposal.

Every other version of Scorpion in the game is amazing, making it difficult to choose the ultimate version. However, the Mortal Kombat 1 Scorpion stands out as unique. In this version, Scorpion is actually the beloved stoic grandmaster Kuai Liang, who is a member of the Lin Kuei. He portrays a calm and compassionate hero. Additionally, his story mode fights are impressive and his ending is thrilling. The question of whether Kuai Liang will continue being Scorpion is an intriguing one.
Scorpion's design in this game is extraordinary. The costumes are sleek and the color palettes are stunning. His gameplay has become more challenging, emphasizing a strike/throw and footsies play style. He no longer possesses mix-ups and cannot rely on teleportation spam. Mortal Kombat 1 Scorpion presents an interesting reinterpretation of the character, leaving us curious about what Netherrealm will do with him.
2 Mortal Kombat X

MKX continues the compelling storyline set up in MK9, transitioning from Hanzo's vengeance to his role as a responsible family man and mentor to Takeda. Surprisingly, players are treated to a peaceful encounter between Hanzo and Kuai Liang, as they share a relaxed moment over tea, devoid of any violence.
Throughout the game, Scorpion discovers Quan Chi's sinister plans and uncovers the truth about the Cyber Initiative. While he remains a mature individual, his hotheadedness is more controlled, and he never strays beyond the boundaries of acceptable behavior. Protecting Earthrealm and his clan takes precedence in his life. Furthermore, MKX offers an array of exceptional designs for Scorpion, including the throwback appearance, an updated design, and a more human-like representation. Overall, this version of Scorpion harmoniously fits into both MK9 and MKX, making it one of the franchise's finest iterations.

There is a debate surrounding whether MK11 surpasses MK1. Nevertheless, Mortal Kombat 11 showcases the most impressive depiction of Scorpion in the entire series. The astounding costumes, gear, and intense special moves seamlessly come together to perfectly embody the essence of Scorpion. Even without the gear system, his core design stands out remarkably. Additionally, he possesses an abundance of flashy maneuvers and captivating Fatalities.
Within the story, Hanzo's character takes on a more composed and tranquil demeanor. His bond with Kuai Liang is truly heartwarming. Witnessing two rivals transform into brothers in arms adds an element of enjoyment. Hanzo's captivating character arc revolving around rebuilding the Shirai Ryu, his intricate relationship with Sub Zero, and especially his younger self, are a delight to behold. Undoubtedly, Hanzo is one of the greatest characters in the history of fighting games, and this game does justice to his portrayal. However, the ending is somewhat disappointing.
