Barbarian Class in Diablo 4: The Ultimate Melee Fighter
The Barbarian class in Diablo 4 is the epitome of a brutal and visceral melee fighter, ready to jump into the fray wielding an array of weapons to bash, slash, and crush demons to dust. With its tanky build and methodical playstyle, it perfectly captures the fantasy of being an unstoppable juggernaut that fans of the series have come to love.
Frenzied Upheaval Build
In Diablo 4's early game, the Barbarian has several builds that outperform others. We have curated three setups that are specifically designed to ensure smooth progression from levels 1 through 35, even without relying on good gear.
This build is designed to quickly become effective as soon as players reach Level 6. Its primary source of generating and spending power comes from Frenzy and Upheaval, both of which are complemented by Shouts and utility skills to ensure a seamless leveling process. The complete Skill Tree setup is outlined below:
- Arsenal Weapon Technique: Two-Handed Sword
- Frenzy (1/5)
- Combat Frenzy
- Upheaval (5/5)
- Furious Upheaval
- Challenging Shout (1/5)
- Tactical Challenging Shout
- War Cry (1/5)
- Mighty War Cry
- Leap (1/5)
- Guttural Yell (3/3)
- Pit Fighter (3/3)
- Slaying Strike (3/3)
- No Mercy (3/3)
- Hamstring (1/5)
- Duelist (3/3)
- Supreme Wrath of the Berserker
- Wrath of the Berserker
- Key Passive: Unconstrained
The Barbarian's ability, Furious Upheaval, gains damage with each hit on an enemy using a different skill. Frenzy, in particular, generates two stacks of Furious Upheaval with every swing, making it the most efficient way to increase its damage quickly. To tackle Elites and large monster groups, players can rely on Challenging Shout and War Cry, while Leap can be used to reposition and gain a better angle for Upheaval. For boss fights, the Unconstrained Key Passive combined with Wrath of the Berserker can be highly effective.
The Barbarian's Hamstring is a passive ability that works subtly to enhance all damage dealt by scaling it with the Damage vs. Slowed and Damage vs. Crowd-Controlled stats. This ability becomes even more powerful when paired with the Two-Handed Sword Arsenal bonus. As players progress, they should aim to acquire a legendary item that possesses the Aspect of the Expectant and Aspect of Limitless Rage affixes. These affixes complement the frequent use of Frenzy and the build's efficient use of Fury. While not essential in the early stages of the game, players should strive to incorporate these affixes into their gear whenever possible.
Bloody Thorns Build
Utilizing Flay and Rend to inflict significant bleeding on bosses and elites, while relying on high Thorns damage to deal with other enemies, this tanky build is slightly more gear dependent than the Upheaval build mentioned earlier. While it is undoubtedly one of the most potent character builds in Diablo 4, some players may find it less enjoyable due to the delayed gratification of bleed builds and the relatively passive nature of Thorns utilization. The recommended skill setup for this build is as follows:
- Arsenal Weapon Technique: Two-Handed Axe
- Flay (1/5)
- Combat Flay
- Rend (1/5)
- Violent Rend
- Pressure Point (3/3)
- Iron Skin (1/5)
- Challenging Shout (1/5)
- Strategic Challenging Shout
- Outburst (3/3)
- Tough as Nails (3/3)
- Rupture
- Fighter's Rupture
- Hamstring (1/5)
- Cut to the Bone (3/3)
- Pit Fighter (3/3)
- No Mercy (3/3)
- Call of the Ancient
- Key Passive: Gushing Wounds
The passive ability, Gushing Wounds, ensures that enemies will constantly be bleeding, unless they are immediately killed by Thorns damage. The combination of Challenging Shout and Iron Skin provides excellent means for survival, with the remaining passives working together to enhance Thorns and increase damage against Vulnerable targets.
The enemy can be rendered Vulnerable with this build, resulting in a significant boost in damage taken from all sources until the effect fades away. This ability makes Rupture an efficient tool for executing targets and dealing burst damage. When facing bosses, Call of the Ancients is a solid choice, but for better horde clearing capabilities, Iron Maelstrom is the way to go as it inflicts bleed and direct damage over a wide area.
For better survivability, utilizing the Iron Blood aspect can prove to be beneficial as it increases damage resistance for every nearby enemy that is bleeding. While Death Wish can enhance Thorns damage, it is advisable to save it for later stages of the game when players have access to effects that enable the Berserking status. In the meantime, it would be wise to enhance Thorns damage by equipping Socketed items with Emeralds.
Furious Hammer Build
The concentrated power of this build makes it akin to the Upheaval build, but with even greater force. Managing Fury is crucial to success, meaning players will need to take advantage of items and effects that boost Fury generation or lower its cost. Take a look at the recommended skill setup:
- Arsenal Weapon Technique: Two-Handed Sword
- Lunging Strike (1/5)
- Enhanced Lunging Strike
- Hammer of the Ancients (5/5)
- Furious Hammer of the Ancients
- Endless Fury (3/3)
- Ground Stomp (1/5)
- Tactical Ground Stomp
- Challenging Shout (1/5)
- Tactical Challenging Shout
- Leap (1/5)
- Power Leap
- Hamstring (1/5)
- Pit Fighter (3/3)
- Slaying Strike (3/3)
- Wrath of the Berserker
- Supreme Wrath of the Berserker
- Tempered Fury (3/3)
- Furious Impulse (2/3)
- Key Passive: Walking Arsenal
The primary objective of this build is to consistently maintain full Fury, enabling Hammer of the Ancients to inflict twice the damage upon impact. To achieve this, the playstyle involves a combination of strategic HotA deployment, incorporating Lunging Strike, Leap, and Ground Stomp casts, ensuring maximum damage potential with each hit.
When using Wrath of the Berserker, damage and Fury generation per hit significantly increase, allowing players to quickly regain all Fury spent on Hammer of the Ancients with just one or two Lunging Strike hits, depending on gear stats. This Ultimate is most effective when battling bosses or large groups of monsters. While Unbridled Rage is the optimal Key Passive for this build, Walking Arsenal can be used in the early game when quickly generating 70 Fury is challenging. It's important to manually set the weapons used for Lunging Strike and Leap to ensure this passive is effective.
Players should keep an eye out for the Aspect of the Edgemaster affix as it enhances the damage of Core Skills when cast at maximum resource capacity. Additionally, the Limitless Rage aspect boosts Core Skill damage for each point of Fury generated beyond the maximum. While Ancestral Force can help with HotA's limited Area of Effect, it is primarily a quality-of-life enhancement.
Diablo 4 is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
