Persona 3 Reload needs to modernize elements of the original game for versatility's sake while staying faithful.
The combat system in the game can be enhanced by drawing inspiration from Persona 5 Royal. Incorporating Light and Darkness skills, which deal damage, from Persona 5 would greatly diversify combat options and party dynamics in Persona 3 Reload.
Persona 3 Reload aims to strike a balance between remaining faithful to the original game and modernizing certain aspects to appeal to newer Persona fans. The extent to which Atlus will deviate from the original Persona 3 in terms of gameplay improvements remains uncertain. However, the game seeks to improve its combat system for greater consistency and user-friendliness, possibly drawing inspiration from Persona 5 Royal by revising some classic Persona series skills.
Skills in the Persona series can be categorized into physical and magic skills. Physical skills encompass Slash, Strike, and Pierce skills, which are typically associated with different weapon types. On the other hand, magic skills encompass elemental types such as Fire, Ice, Electricity, Wind, Light, and Darkness. Persona 5 introduced Nuclear and Psychokinesis skills. While most skills inflict specific amounts of elemental damage, Light and Darkness skills possess the ability to instantly defeat enemies, thus resulting in imbalanced and often frustrating combat situations.
Persona 3 Reload Should Follow Persona 5 Royal's Approach to Light and Darkness Skills
In Persona 3 and Persona 4, the skills Hama and Mudo represent Light and Darkness abilities. These skills, along with their higher level counterparts, focus on providing the user with a chance to instantly kill an enemy. However, even at higher levels, these skills lacked reliability and were not worthwhile for party members. This made characters like Naoto from Persona 4 less than ideal, particularly when facing bosses. On the other hand, it could be frustrating to encounter enemies with these skills, as they could unexpectedly wipe out the player with powerful moves like Mahamaon or Mamudoon.
Persona 5 and its enhanced version, Persona 5 Royal, take a different approach to the Light and Darkness skills. The abilities are now represented by Bless and Curse, renaming Hama and Mudo accordingly. In addition to these instant-kill skills, Persona 5 introduces damaging skills Kouha and Eiha, along with their more powerful variations. This inclusion of non-instant-kill skills makes characters and Personas specializing in Light and Darkness much more consistent and valuable as core party members, especially when compared to previous games like Persona 3 and Persona 4.
To enhance combat and party customization in Persona 3 Reload, implementing the Light and Darkness skill system from Persona 5 Royal would greatly benefit the gameplay. Including Kouha and Eiha skills, in addition to Hama and Mudo skills, would make characters like Ken and Koromaru more versatile and expand their arsenal of useful abilities. While not as limiting as Naoto's reliance solely on Light and Darkness skills in Persona 4, altering these elements would provide Ken and Koromaru with a wider range of elemental options beyond just Fire and Electricity skills.
While Atlus may strive to preserve the essence of the original Persona 3 in developing Persona 3 Reload, introducing Kouha and Eiha skills alongside Hama and Mudo from Persona 5 would be a logical choice. It wouldn't necessarily require completely replacing the insta-kill skills, finding a balance between the old and new systems to maintain the integrity of Persona 3's game design. The versatility and consistency of damage-dealing skills compared to insta-kill abilities make them an obvious improvement for Persona 3 Reload without compromising the original concept.
Persona 3 Reload is set to release in early 2024 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
