Star Citizen, the highly anticipated crowd-funded video game, has now achieved a remarkable feat by securing the largest budget ever seen in the gaming industry. Surpassing the combined budgets of renowned titles such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Cyberpunk 2077, Star Citizen solidifies its position as a record-breaking project in the world of crowd-funding.
Originally launching on Kickstarter with a modest target of $2 million, Star Citizen aimed to serve as a spiritual successor to the beloved Wing Commander games, spearheaded by industry veteran Chris Roberts. However, the game's development journey has been marred by ongoing debates and controversies, as the ambitious project, including its single-player campaign, Squadron 42, has spanned over a decade. Despite the prolonged timeline, the development team has persevered, securing continuous funding from diverse sources to ensure the progress of the game remains uninterrupted.
In September 2022, Star Citizen's crowdfunding budget surpassed $500M, and as of now, it has surged to nearly $600M without any release date in sight. To put this into perspective, the budget for Grand Theft Auto 5 was approximately $137M, Red Dead Redemption 2 had a budget of $170M, and Cyberpunk 2077's budget was around $174M. This staggering figure implies that the cost of developing Star Citizen now exceeds the combined budgets of three of the most expensive video games in the past decade.
Since its release in 2013, Star Citizen has constantly been updated with new content, giving players the opportunity to play in some capacity over the course of several years. Alongside these updates, the developer has allowed players to purchase new ships, gradually increasing the game's price tag. The most recent update, released in March, was not without controversy. It is uncertain whether a complete version of the game will eventually be available on digital storefronts.
Star Citizen is available on PC.
