Just when gamers thought Summer Game Fest and reveal season was over, Nintendo surprised everyone with a lengthy Nintendo Direct. The Direct was packed with exciting announcements from both first and third-party developers, but the true winners of the presentation were Super Mario fans. They were thrilled to receive confirmation of a Super Mario RPG remake, a new Princess Peach game, a remastered Luigi's Mansion 2, fresh Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC, and a new WarioWare game. However, the most significant and exciting announcement was the unveiling of Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
Saving the best for last, Super Mario Bros. Wonder marks the long-awaited return of 2D side-scrollers in the beloved franchise. While the game bears resemblance to its modern counterparts, it also introduces a range of new features, including a brand new power-up that adds to the excitement.
Every New Power-Up Confirmed for Super Mario Bros. Wonder So Far
Super Mario Bros. Wonder introduces a new gimmick called the Wonder Flower power-up, which is the central focus of its gameplay trailer. These Wonder Flowers appear at specific intervals during a stage and have a significant impact on gameplay. In the trailer, two unique effects of the Wonder Flower are showcased. Firstly, it causes the stage's green pipes to move, creating both obstacles to overcome and tools to aid Mario in reaching higher platforms. Additionally, the Wonder Flower summons a stampede of sheep-like animals that carry Mario to the end of the stage.
In addition to its other abilities, Super Mario Bros. Wonder's Wonder Flowers have the power to transform Mario into various forms. One of these forms elongates Mario's body, creating an eerie and intimidating version of himself that stretches vertically along with the background trees. Another form turns Mario into a spiked ball, granting him the ability to break through blocks with ease.
Furthermore, the announcement trailer for Super Mario Bros. Wonder revealed yet another brand new power-up. Towards the end of the trailer, Mario hits a question block and a fruit shaped like an elephant's head emerges. When Mario collects it, he transforms into an elephant, complete with dungarees, hat, and mustache. With this form, Mario takes heavy steps forward and uses his trunk to launch a Goomba into the air. It is likely that this elephant form will allow Mario to smash through blocks and send enemies flying with his trunk.
Throughout the trailer, fans can also catch glimpses of familiar power-ups from the franchise. The Super Mushroom is shown at the beginning, causing Mario to grow in size upon consumption. Later on, a Fire Flower appears, once again granting Mario the ability to unleash ranged attacks. Additionally, players will be able to glide through the air using Mario and Peach's hats.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder launches on October 20, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
