In Baldur's Gate 3, players will come across various puzzles and challenges as they journey through Faerun. Some of these challenges are presented in the form of alluring chests that tempt players with the promise of valuable treasures. There are different types of chests that players will encounter, including unlocked ones, locked chests that can be opened with a key or lock-picking, and sealed chests that can only be opened by solving a puzzle.
The game provides information in the form of riddles to hint at the solution to these mysteries. Players must decipher these riddles to uncover how the chest can be opened. For instance, the Toy Chest in Grymforge is one such chest that players must unravel in order to claim the treasure of Harper's Stash in Baldur's Gate 3.
How to Open the Toy Chest and Reveal Harper's Stash
In the middle of Act I in Baldur's Gate 3, players may feel the urge to venture into the vast underground caverns known as the Underdark. Gaining access to this mysterious place can be tough, but once inside, players and their party will uncover numerous hidden secrets and valuable treasures.
When players arrive at the Decrepit Village, located near the heart of the Underdark's map, they will have the opportunity to board a boat and journey to Grymforge. Grymforge is an extensive cave system that holds ancient dwarven ruins, dangers, and precious items. Within Grymforge lies the Adamantine Forge, a significant location of interest.
Like in other regions, while exploring Grymforge, players will come across various chests. Most of these can be easily opened, but a few pose a greater challenge to loot. In the depths of Grymforge, located approximately at coordinates (X:-691, Y:379), players will stumble upon a Harper symbol etched onto the ground, indicating the proximity of a treasure chest.
But when the player engages with any of the three treasure chests, it will become evident that they are actually Mimics in disguise, leading the player into an immediate battle. After defeating the Mimics, the player will naturally gain experience and have the opportunity to obtain loot as rewards.
Located not far from the Mimics, players may spot a small Toy Chest positioned at coordinates (X:-701, Y:376). The Toy Chest is described as "A miniature chest tailored for small hands," but it cannot be opened by simply assigning a smaller character or casting an Enlarge/Reduce spell on a party member. Surprisingly, the Toy Chest itself is not the real treasure.
During their previous exploration of Grymforge, players may have come across a book that holds the key to unlocking the concealed treasure in this area. To solve the puzzle of the Toy Chest, players must pass an Investigation check and deduce that using a Light spell is the trick. However, it is important to note that locating, interacting with, or obtaining the book is entirely unnecessary.
There are multiple methods the player can employ to “open” the Toy Chest, including the following:
Cast the “Light” Evocation Cantrip
Cast the “Produce Flame” Conjuration Cantrip
Cast the “Daylight” Evocation Spell
Utilize a Scroll that generates Light (such as Scroll of Flame Blade)
Depending on the party's level, Gale or Shadowheart may have acquired Light or Daylight spells, which will greatly assist in solving this puzzle. Successfully casting Light on the chest will reveal a larger Harper's Chest, as indicated by the rune, and guarded by dangerous Mimics. The player can then choose to either use Thieves' Tools or pass a Sleight of Hand check to unlock the Harper's Chest and claim the treasure inside.
Baldur's Gate 3 is currently available for PC. The PlayStation 5 version will launch on September 6th, 2023, while a version for Xbox Series X/S is still being developed.
