Rolan's Transformation in Act Three
In Baldur's Gate 3, numerous characters have narratives that unfold over the course of all three acts. Among them is Rolan, who initially comes across as a conceited and self-absorbed spellcaster, proud of his accomplishment of being chosen to study under the esteemed wizard Lorroakan. However, as players progress through his questline, they witness a remarkable transformation in Rolan, revealing a side of him that is entirely unexpected.
Rolan In Act One
Finding and Speaking with Rolan in BG3To progress in BG3, players must locate and have a conversation with Rolan in all three acts of the game. This is essential to advancing his questline. To ensure Rolan achieves the best possible outcome, adhere to the following guidelines. Keep in mind that the direction of Rolan's questline may vary depending on the players' decisions. However, by following these steps meticulously and safeguarding his siblings, players can successfully complete Rolan's quest.
Rolan is first encountered in Act One, amidst the Tiefling refugees, within the scenic Emerald Grove. With a touch of arrogance, he confidently shares his plan of apprenticing under the esteemed wizard Lorroakan once he arrives at Baldur's Gate. For those seeking him, venture towards The Hollow, nestled discreetly at the rear of the Druid Grove. There, in the company of his siblings Cal and Lia, he engages in deep deliberation, contemplating whether to confront or flee from the encroaching menace posed by the relentless forces of the Absolute.
Players are urged to convince him to remain in the Emerald Grove until the Goblins are no longer a threat, as both the Druids and other Tieflings would greatly benefit from having a powerful wizard by their side. The option to Persuade or utilize Dragonborn or Ranger backgrounds is available to persuade him to stay.
Once successful in persuading Rolan to remain at the Druid Grove, players should speak with him again to learn about his upcoming apprenticeship under Lorroakan. He excitedly (and possibly arrogantly) reveals his eagerness to reach Baldur's Gate for this very reason. Following the defeat of the Goblin Camp and celebration with the Tieflings, they will continue their journey to Baldur's Gate, and players will not encounter Rolan again until Act 2.
Rolan In Act Two
In Act 2, Rolan seeks refuge at the Last Light Inn, accompanied by several other Tieflings. It is revealed that the Tieflings who escaped from the Druid Grove were attacked by followers of the Absolute. Additionally, Zevlor, who was thought to be an ally, betrayed them by bringing most of the Tieflings to Moonrise Towers. The fate of the captured Tieflings is uncertain, but Rolan firmly believes that he is the only one capable of rescuing his siblings, Cal and Lia.
After conversing with Rolan at the bar in the Last Light Inn, where it is evident that he has been drinking, he decides to personally attempt the rescue of Cal and Lia. However, his overconfidence is insufficient to break the Shadow Curse. Following his departure, head to the southernmost bridge that leads to the western section of the Shadow-Cursed Lands (Reithwin Town). From a distance, players will witness signs of conflict. It is crucial for the party to reach Rolan swiftly, as his questline will be terminated if he perishes.
Rolan is confronted by a group of Shadowcursed Undead, located far south of the Last Light Inn. Activate turn-based mode to minimize damage to Rolan and divert the attention of the Shadowcursed Undead. Remember to provide healing to Rolan and ensure his survival throughout the encounter, so he can safely return to the Last Light Inn afterward.
Once players have saved Rolan's life and speak to him at the Last Light Inn, he expresses some dissatisfaction, as he acknowledges his inability to handle the situation alone. However, following the successful rescue of the Tieflings from the prison at Moonrise Towers, including the rescue of Cal and Lia, Rolan's perspective undergoes some changes.
Rolan In Act Three
Act 2 holds immense significance in Rolan's journey. In order to succeed, players are tasked with safeguarding his survival during the encounter with the formidable Shadow Cursed Undead, as well as rescuing Cal and Lia from the confines of the prisons located within Moonrise Towers. After defeating Ketheric Thorm and arriving in Baldur's Gate with the refugee Tieflings, players will not encounter Rolan again until their visit to Sorcerous Sundries. This mystical shop, which also serves as the entrance to Lorroakan's tower, becomes accessible when players navigate their way from Rivington to the Lower City. At the front desk of Sorcerous Sundries, Rolan can be found attending to his duties. However, appearances can be deceiving in this peculiar establishment.
Lorroakan's relentless search for the Nightsong has been a central theme in the game, as hinted by Rolan since Act 1. In Act 2, players finally discover the true identity of the Nightsong. Upon locating Lorroakan and divulging this information, players can engage in a conversation with her at camp. Motivated by a desire for vengeance against another oppressor, Lorroakan will set off. The next encounter with Lorroakan will trigger a consequential cutscene, where players must pick a side.
Despite receiving guidance from Lorroakan, Rolan has come to realize that the renowned wizard is inherently arrogant and cruel as a teacher. As long as Cal and Lia have been rescued, Rolan joins forces against his former mentor, leading to a battle against the tower's current head wizard.
Following Lorroakan's defeat and an awe-inspiring cutscene featuring Nightsong, Rolan exposes the true extent of Lorroakan's cruel nature as his mentor. Regretful of his previous brusque behavior towards the player, Rolan sincerely expresses gratitude and reveals his intention to assume control of the tower. He also pledges unwavering loyalty as an ally in the impending battle against the Absolute. This marks the culmination of Rolan's quest, bringing it to a satisfying conclusion.
