Monkey D. Luffy
One Piece season 1 encompasses the initial story arcs of the manga and focuses on Monkey D. Luffy's efforts to assemble his crew. Throughout this segment, Luffy's journey is marked by the addition of new crew members and the forging of new friendships. Consequently, the live-action adaptation of One Piece features a significantly large cast. Moreover, there are countless adversaries that Luffy and the Straw Hat pirates encounter, along with additional allies and minor characters who may assume more prominent roles in subsequent seasons. Given that each character possesses their own distinct backstory, there is an abundance of background information to delve into.
The main protagonist of One Piece, Monkey D. Luffy, harbors a singular ambition - to ascend the throne of the Pirates as the King. In order to fulfill his lofty aspiration, Luffy embarks on a quest to locate the fabled One Piece, a legendary treasure that catalyzed the era of notorious seafarers. Luffy's formative years were spent amidst a fraternity of pirates, chiefly under the guidance of the enigmatic Captain "Red Hair" Shanks. Intoxicated by the captivating chronicles spun by Shanks, Luffy resolved from a tender age to chart a path as a buccaneer. However, a fateful encounter with a mystical Devil Fruit, conferring upon him the extraordinary ability to stretch his body like rubber, forever transformed the course of Luffy's existence.
Luffy's past, prior to his encounter with Shanks, is expected to remain unexplored in the Netflix adaptation of One Piece. The identity of Luffy's parents remains a mystery to him, as he was primarily raised by his rarely present grandfather. Instead, Luffy grew up surrounded by different individuals within Windmill Village, including a bandit, a bar owner, and two fellow young boys whom he considered his brothers.
Roronoa Zoro
Originally a bounty hunter, Roronoa Zoro earned the title of "Pirate Hunter" and his formidable reputation as the "demon in the form of a man" preceded him throughout the One Piece world. Zoro's exceptional skills as a swordsman are showcased through his distinctive three-sword fighting style, where he even wields a blade with his mouth. Like Luffy, Zoro harbors a singular ambition: to become the greatest swordsman in the world and honor a promise made to a dear friend.
Similarly to Luffy, Zoro's parents remain unmentioned in the One Piece manga. However, future stories heavily imply that the origins of this skilled swordsman can be traced back to Wano, a Grand Line island known for its samurai. The earliest scenes featuring Zoro depict him as a young child who trained tirelessly to become a swordsman alongside other aspiring youths. Among them, Zoro formed a close bond with a girl named Kuina, who shared his ambition to become the world's greatest sword fighter. Tragically, Kuina met an untimely demise. To honor her memory, Zoro is determined to accomplish their shared objective. Remarkably, one of Zoro's three swords was passed down to him from Kuina's family.
Nami
Not a fan of pirates, Nami possesses the exceptional ability to steal anything from anyone. With her innate talent in cartography, she can serve as an ideal navigator on a sea voyage. Even though Luffy and Zoro lack knowledge about Nami, they extend an invitation for her to join their newly formed crew. Despite her aversion towards pirates, Nami accepts Luffy’s offer, driven by the opportunity to accumulate greater wealth from the world’s most coveted treasures through the pursuit of the One Piece in the Grand Line.
Continuing the pattern, the identities of Nami's parents remain an enigma in the world of One Piece. The young girl, alongside her fellow orphan Nojiko, was discovered by a Marine named Bell-mère, who then took on the role of an adoptive mother for both girls. Together, they found solace in Cocoyasi Village. However, Nami's life took a devastating turn when a brutal pirate assault resulted in the tragic loss of Bell-mère's life.
Usopp
Growing up in Syrup Village, Usopp had a penchant for spinning thrilling tales of pirate escapades and daring adventures that, in truth, never transpired. Despite coming from a lineage of pirates, Usopp remained rooted in his village. Tragically, he lost both his parents, leaving him alone with the unfading hope that his pirate father would someday reappear. In the eyes of the villagers, Usopp became notorious as the young boy who incessantly fabricated stories about pirate invasions. However, for Kaya, heir to the village's wealthiest family, Usopp's fables held an enchanting allure.
Sanji
Sanji, a character from One Piece, claims to be "The best cook in the East Blue." He is employed at the ship-restaurant Baratie and has had a passion for cooking since his early years. Sanji's ultimate goal is to discover the legendary sea called the All Blue, which he believes to be a place where all seas meet and where the finest cooking ingredients can be found. Additionally, Sanji is known for his charm with women.
In a rather uncommon twist, One Piece has revealed Sanji's background, confirming his full name as Sanji Vinsmoke. The Vinsmokes are a notorious crime family from North Blue known as the "Germa 66," celebrated for their technological and scientific prowess. Sanji escaped from his oppressive family and eventually found refuge with Red-Leg Zeff, a fellow lover of food. Zeff, who had given up piracy, took the young Sanji under his wing and made him a chef at Baratie.
Koby
Koby, one of the original characters in the One Piece story, finds himself in an unfortunate situation after mistakenly boarding the wrong ship on a fishing trip. He becomes a captive of the notorious Alvida Pirates, compelled to serve under them for two long years. Throughout this time, Koby secretly harbors aspirations of one day breaking free from their clutches. However, it is only after a chance encounter with Luffy that Koby's resolve transforms, prompting him to confront Alvida. With a newfound determination, Koby sets his sights on realizing his ultimate dream of joining the Marines, driven by a deep desire to assist those in need.
Vice-Admiral Garp
Garp, a Vice-admiral of the Marines, was initially introduced in One Piece's Diary of Koby-Meppo. This serialized story unfolded on the manga's cover pages. Though his entrance in the manga was unobtrusive, Garp holds immense significance as a character in One Piece. His extraordinary journey commenced long before the era of the Great Age of Pirates. Garp notably clashed against Gold Roger and actively participated in numerous momentous battles that transpired well before Luffy's time. For his valiant actions, he acquired the moniker "Garp the Hero." Despite their frequent conflicts, Garp and Roger somehow forged a bond that resembled friendship.
Arlong
Despite holding the position of Vice-admiral, Garp, one of the most powerful and respected officers within the Marines, has consciously decided to remain at this level. He understands that further promotions would limit his freedom to act independently. Regardless of his rank, Garp is just as formidable as any other Marine within the fleet.Arlong, the leader of the notorious Arlong Pirates in One Piece, strikes terror into the hearts of all who come across him in the East Blue. With a staggering bounty of 20,000,000 berries on his head, Arlong is widely recognized as one of the most dreaded pirates in the region. Exploiting their brute strength, the Arlong Pirates mercilessly take over villages and force every citizen to pay a hefty fee. Failure to comply results in a grim ultimatum - the complete obliteration of everything and everyone in sight. Arlong strategically establishes his menacing stronghold, Arlong Park, on the Conomi Islands, serving as a chilling testament to his unparalleled dominion.
Before his reign of terror in East Blue, Arlong was more involved in the Grand Line, growing up alongside other fish-men and enduring the disdain and prejudice shown towards their kind by humans. Alongside notable fish-men like Jinbe, Arlong became a member of the Sun Pirates, a group led by the revered Fisher Tiger, who aimed to free fish-men from enslavement while avoiding unnecessary conflict with humans. However, Arlong always held a differing viewpoint, and after Fisher Tiger's passing, the infamous Arlong pirate crew, as portrayed in Netflix's One Piece, was established.
Buggy the Clown
Buggy, a clown-like pirate, serves as one of the primary antagonists in the early arcs of One Piece. However, his history predates the era of the Great Age of Pirates. Initially a member of Gold Roger's crew alongside Shanks, Buggy the Clown eventually establishes his own team after Roger's execution, gaining recognition in the East Blue. In a twist of fate, neither Buggy nor Shanks possess knowledge about the elusive treasure known as the One Piece or how to attain it, despite their affiliation with the Pirate King. Similar to Luffy, Buggy has also consumed a Devil Fruit, granting him distinctive abilities.
Red-Haired Shanks
The "pirate in a straw hat" known as Shanks played a significant role in Luffy's backstory, as well as in other pivotal moments that occurred before Luffy's own journey began. Initially accompanying the Pirate King, who bestowed upon him his iconic hat, Shanks eventually formed his own crew after the death of Gold Roger, causing a perceived "betrayal" toward his former best friend Buggy. Shanks went on to establish himself as a renowned pirate in his own right and eventually earned the esteemed title of one of the notorious Four Emperors. However, all of this came after he spent some time unwinding in Windmill Village and crossed paths with a certain Monkey D. Luffy.
Gold Roger
Gold Roger, the original Pirate King, embarked on his piratical journey long before it became trendy, ultimately reshaping the world by making his prized treasure accessible to all. One Piece has yet to unveil the specific catalyst that drove Gold Roger to set sail, igniting curiosity among fans. Nevertheless, his extraordinary feats while navigating the treacherous waters of the Grand Line permeated into the realm of mythical tales, catalyzing a fresh wave of aspiring seafarers and drawing the wrath of the World Government. The demise of Gold Roger signaled the glorious advent of the Great Age of Pirates, embarking Luffy on his fateful odyssey in search of the fabled One Piece.
