Acquiring magical items in Baldur's Gate 3 can significantly enhance a character build in unexpected ways. While some enhancements are simple, such as improving a specific saving throw or granting the ability to cast spells like Speak with Animals, others provide more enigmatic benefits.
One such benefit is referred to as 'Momentum.' Although Baldur's Gate 3 is based on the game Dungeons and Dragons, which features a feat called Momentum, this particular buff operates differently. It serves as a passive enhancement that proves exceptionally advantageous for character builds that utilize it.
Momentum Buff
Movement Speed increased by 1.5m.
Momentum is canceled when Restrained, Incapacitated, Prone, or Slowed.
Movement speed is crucial for melee attackers. When players are choosing the optimal race for each class, even an additional meter or two can result in an extra attack for classes such as Rogues, Barbarians, and Fighters. By utilizing an item that provides Momentum, melee attackers can frequently close the distance to faraway enemies within a single round of combat.
However, it is important to note that most items only grant Momentum under specific conditions. For instance, the Haste Helm grants Momentum to the wearer during the initial three rounds of combat, whereas the Springstep Boots only bestow Momentum upon the wearer for three turns if they first engage in a dash or a similar action.
In the event that players come across such an item, it is advisable to switch party members and offer the benefit to individuals such as Karlach, Lae'zel, or Astarion, who can make optimal use of it. However, if the player character gains a significant advantage in terms of movement speed, it is encouraged to retain the item.
Enemies can become hard to reach, particularly on the most challenging difficulty levels, as they cleverly utilize the varying heights of the environment. A character with swiftness can swiftly dispatch these archers and spellcasters, swiftly closing the gap and exposing them to incoming attacks. However, it is crucial to avoid triggering counterattacks by prematurely disengaging from battles.
Baldur's Gate 3 is currently accessible on PC. The PlayStation 5 edition will be released on September 6th, 2023, while an Xbox Series X/S version is currently under development.
