Players in Baldur's Gate 3 will inevitably feel compelled to venture to the Goblin Camp in order to rescue the Tiefling Refugees and locate the missing druid Halsin. Additionally, the camp holds valuable loot that players will not want to miss.
How to Find the Goblin Camp
To reach the Goblin Camp, players should head west after leaving the Emerald Grove through the main gate where the goblin attack occurred. They should then proceed through the Blighted Village and continue to the western edge of the map, where they will find the Goblin Camp.
Gaining access may pose a challenge. If players opt to liberate Sazza from prison in the Emerald Grove, she will negotiate with the guards to grant the party entry. Alternatively, players will have to rely on their persuasive skills to convince the guard (possibly resorting to applying Worg excrement on their face), utilize their Tadpole to persuade the guard, or engage in combat with the guards in an attempt to prevent them from raising the alarm.
The Goblin Camp
Upon successfully bypassing the guards and infiltrating the Goblin Camp, players will immediately spot Volo captivating the audience with his performance on stage. Engaging with him will inevitably lead to him being captured by a Goblin, which is actually advantageous as it sets the stage for players to rescue him later on.
Adjacent to the entrance, a Goblin can be overheard discussing the activity of Chicken Chasing. Should the player express interest, the Goblin will extend an invitation to participate. However, if the player had previously engaged in a battle with and subjugated the Owlbear in the vicinity but spared its cub, the cub will have consumed the Chicken and taken its position in the game. To emerge victorious in this activity, players will need to either exercise precise movements to guide the Chicken/Owlbear to the goal, or rely on the ability to "Speak with Animals" to convince it to independently make its way towards the goal.
Whichever path you choose, winning at Chicken Chasing can help you earn some extra gold. After that, head to the eastern section of the camp where you'll come across a Waypoint. This will make your return trips to the Goblin Camp much more convenient. You'll find a goblin named Crusher in this area, boasting about his adventures. By intimidating him, you can gain favor with Lae'zel. Alternatively, if you decide to kill him, you'll be rewarded with "Crusher's Ring," which increases the wearer's movement by +3m. Players who selected the "Dark Urge" origin will have a special dialogue option available in this situation.
Players can proceed beyond Crusher and ascend to the upper portion of the camp where they will encounter "Stimk." In the event of failure to persuade Stimk (DC: 15 Deception Check), a challenging battle awaits. Following the confrontation with Stimk, players will discover a Gazebo where "Booyahg Piddle" can be found engrossed in a book. By passing a DC: 10 Intimidation or Persuasion skill check, players may convince Booyahg to relinquish the book, thereby gaining Shadowheart's approval. Alternatively, players can employ Illithid Wisdom to coerce Booyahg into surrendering the book.
Once players have concluded their exploration in this area, the path leads inside through the main door located at the northern end of the camp, leading to the Shattered Sanctum.
The Shattered Sanctum
Upon entering the Shattered Sanctum, players may trigger dialogue from Shadowheart, provided she is in the party. After expressing her displeasure at being in a ruined temple of Selune, players can progress further, engaging in dialogue with the guards. Utilizing charisma-based skills, players can attempt to persuade the guards, with Drow being permitted passage without hesitation, and Sazza being capable of convincing the guards to allow the party through.
Moving past the guards, players will notice Priestess Gut directly ahead. Speaking to her presents the opportunity to receive the "Mark of the Absolute," which aids in deceiving cultists into believing the party's allegiance to them. Additionally, she offers assistance in removing the Illithid Tadpole from the player's eye.
Accepting Gut's offer will grant you and your party access to her Chapel, where you can hold private discussions. This secluded space provides an advantageous setting for those who wish to eliminate Gut without any outside interference. However, caution should be exercised in accepting her offer to remove the Tadpole, as she may attempt to drug and restrain the active character. In such a predicament, players must either find a means of escape or rely on the assistance of Korilla, an assassin who will arrive to handle Gut. The Chapel, to which Gut will guide you, features a doorway that leads to the Defiled Temple. Within this temple lies her bedroom and a corridor that leads to the moon puzzle. Successfully solving this enigma will unlock a pathway into the Selunite Outpost located in the Underdark.
Defeating Priestess Gut grants players access to valuable rewards such as her Illithid Tadpole, the Absolute's Talisman, and Absolute's Warboard. The Tadpole allows the wearer to cast aid once per long rest and grants advantage on death saves. The Warboard serves as a shield, enabling the wielder to cast heroism and provides a +1 bonus on all saving throws for those with the Mark of the Absolute. Additionally, Priestess Gut possesses various helpful scrolls and potions.
To avoid complications, players may choose to confront Gut after completing other tasks in the Goblin Camp. Engaging her in combat without eliminating her immediately will prompt her to call for reinforcements, potentially leading to uncontrollable situations and hindering progress in the area.
To the right of where Gut was discovered, players can find the location where the Goblins are holding one of the captured adventurers. Additionally, here resides Abdirak, a devout follower of Loviatar, who has the ability to bestow the "Loviatar's Love" buff upon a character if they can endure his torment thrice. Engaging with the goblin torturers in the adjoining room will reveal the lack of progress in their interrogation. By successfully using their deception skills, players can persuade them to vacate the premises, although Drow characters can bypass this skill check entirely. Speaking with the captive will yield valuable information about the adventurers' purpose and presents the opportunity to set him free.
After releasing or interrogating the prisoner, it is advisable for players to proceed north, passing Abdirak's room. They will come across Volo, who is currently being held captive by one of the Goblins. Engaging in a conversation with Gribbo, the goblin responsible for guarding Volo, allows players the opportunity to persuade her into surrendering him. In the event of failure, players can patiently wait for her to depart and then unlock the door. Upon being freed, Volo expresses his gratitude and employs a potion of invisibility to make his escape, but not before pledging to join the group at their camp, regardless of their wishes. Continuing further north, on the right side of the map, players will find the entrance to the Worg Pens. Before further exploration, it is recommended to deal with the Worg Pens as it is a small detour and an essential character can be discovered there.
To reach Minthara, known as "The Drow" by the Goblins, players can head left from the Worg Pen entrance. Minthara is the mastermind behind the planned raid on the Emerald Grove. She will appreciate it if the party shares the location of the grove with her. On the other hand, if Sazza has been freed, she will take charge and divulge the location to Minthara, essentially making the decision for the player. Should Minthara discover the grove's whereabouts, the only way to prevent her from initiating the raid in a day's time (after the party has had a long rest) is by eliminating her right there. (Of course, players can still choose to side with the Emerald Grove and assist them in repelling the attackers after the raid has commenced.) While Minthara poses a considerable threat as a fortified Drow Paladin, players who are willing to forego some loot can opt for an easier kill by shoving her into the bottomless pits near her location.
When looting Minthara's body, you can acquire the following items: Spidersilk Armor, Boots of Striding, and Xyanyde. Xyanyde is a special mace that casts Faerie Fire on a creature when the wielder fails to hit with an attack. The Spidersilk Armor is exceptional light armor that provides a +1 bonus to stealth checks and grants advantage on constitution saving throws. The Boots of Striding increase the wearer's movement by 1.5 meters while concentrating on a spell, but they can only be used by spellcasters who can wear medium armor. Additionally, players have the option of taking her Tadpole and using it to gain a new Illithid power.
On the other hand, if you choose to support Minthara and help her raid the Emerald Grove, she becomes recruitable later in the game. However, this choice comes at the expense of being unable to recruit Halsin the Druid.
Located west of Minthara is the throne room of Dror Ragzlin, a hobgoblin True Soul. Currently, Ragzlin is engaged in the task of interrogating a deceased Mind Flayer from the Nautiloid. Employing a "Speak with Dead" scroll, he seeks to extract valuable information. Players have the option to either permit Ragzlin to continue undisturbed, attempt a Wisdom check to intervene in the interrogation, or depart before the Mindflayer exposes the party's secret. Successfully taking control of the interrogation presents an excellent opportunity to acquire additional knowledge. However, players must exercise caution when selecting their actions, as Ragzlin may detect any suspicious maneuvers. Overusing such options could potentially provoke him into initiating a confrontation with the party.
Positioning a rogue in the rafters above the room using the ladder will make the tough fight against Dror Ragzlin and his goblin allies much easier. From this safe vantage point, the rogue can rain death down on the enemies. Additionally, players can utilize the pit leading to the spider pen to eliminate some foes by pushing them in. Ragzlin himself is a formidable physical fighter armed with the Faithbreaker, a mace that deals an extra 1d6 force damage and can push targets back 5 meters. It is advisable to either immobilize him while dealing with his minions or prioritize defeating him to minimize the potential damage he can inflict.
By successfully defeating Dror Ragzlin, players can obtain the Faithbreaker mace and his Illithid tadpole. Exploring further, players can ascend the stairs behind his throne, where they will discover a treasure vault that can be unlocked by picking the lock.
Players should be cautious when killing Dror Ragzlin as it will usually cause the other members of the Goblin Camp to become hostile.
In the southwest of the Shattered Sanctum, near Priestess Gut's Chapel, there is a notable area. Here, players will find a merchant named Roah Moonglow who sells a variety of useful items. One such item is "The Whispering Promise," a ring that provides a 1d4 bonus to attack rolls and saving throws for two turns after the wearer heals a creature.
The Worg Pens
After entering the Worg Pens, players will come across Goblins who are bothering a bear. In order to rescue Halsin the Druid, players must intervene and assist the bear. It is crucial that players swiftly defeat the three Goblins who seek reinforcements, and subsequently eliminate the remaining Goblins and their worgs to save the bear. Surprisingly, the bear turns out to be Halsin, who expresses gratitude towards the party. Additionally, Halsin asks the party to eliminate the leadership of the Goblin Camp, if they have not already done so.
