Before the release of Final Fantasy 16, the game's producer and mastermind behind Final Fantasy 14, Naoki Yoshida (also known as Yoshi P), made it clear that the team had long-term goals for the game. Although there were no plans for Day-1 patches or major story DLC expansions, Creative Business Unit 3 aimed to support the game and ensure it had a lasting appeal through positive word of mouth and regular free updates. Now that the game has been available for more than two weeks and many fans have completed it, it's an opportune time to extend Final Fantasy 16's lifespan with additional DLC Hunts.
After completing the main story mission "The Gathering Storm," players unlock the Hunts side quest chain in Final Fantasy 16. They can access the Hunt Board in the Hideaway, where Nektar the Moogle acts as the player's liaison. The beloved Moogles from the Final Fantasy series make a return in Final Fantasy 16. Completing these Hunts rewards Clive with valuable crafting materials, experience points, or Gil, and many of them feature iconic monsters from the Final Fantasy franchise.
More Classic Series Monsters Could Return in New Final Fantasy 16 Hunts
Once unlocked, Final Fantasy 16 offers players over 30 hunts to challenge their abilities in the expansive world of Valisthea. While the game showcases impressive redesigned versions of classic Final Fantasy creatures in its own unique style, there are still beloved fan favorites that are absent from the hunt side quests. Introducing extra hunts through free DLC would provide the talented team at Creative Business Unit 3 with the perfect opportunity to showcase their skills in reimagining even more iconic adversaries.
Among the notable enemies that players can encounter, the King Behemoth stands as one of the pinnacle hunts in the game. This creature, often encountered just before the final dungeon in previous Final Fantasy games, presents a formidable challenge. To truly test the players' abilities, one creature from the Final Fantasy canon that fits perfectly is the deceptively cute Tonberry. Despite its adorable appearance, this monster is known for its deadly capabilities. With a wealth of creative and iconic monster designs spanning over 35 years, the possibilities for additional hunts are virtually limitless.
Adding Some Free DLC Could Assuage Final Fantasy 16's Dip in Sales
Final Fantasy 16, being a PS5 exclusive, experienced a substantial decline in sales during its second week, after a successful initial week. Despite selling over three million physical copies in the first week, with digital sales figures still being calculated, the game saw a staggering 90 percent decrease in sales during its second week.
Interestingly, Square Enix does not appear to be concerned by this drop. Instead, the company acknowledges the need to provide ongoing support for the game and generate long-term sales through alternative means. One effective approach to attract new players or entice lapsed players to return and retain their physical copies is by offering free DLC.
Some people criticize the new combat system in Final Fantasy 16 and express regret over the absence of its traditional turn-based combat, while others are pleasantly surprised by Ryota Suzuki's combat system and find it engaging. It motivates fans to continue playing, preventing a decline in their interest. The Hunts in the game offer the most enjoyable combat encounters, making it an ideal choice for DLC releases in the future. Final Fantasy 16 can be played on PS5.
