HoYoverse's hit gacha games, Honkai: Star Rail and Genshin Impact, are currently two of the most popular live-service games, largely due to their vast array of characters. In the recent update of Honkai: Star Rail Version 1.1, a new 5-star Nihility Void unit called Silver Wolf was introduced, while Genshin Impact Version 3.7 added a new 4-star Dendro character named Kirara, expanding the ever-growing roster of both games. While the continuous introduction of new characters keeps the games fresh and exciting, the true essence of these games lies in their two main protagonists: the Traveler in Genshin Impact and the Trailblazer in Honkai: Star Rail.
Despite the abundance of characters in both games, the usage rate and popularity of the main characters often diminish as players tend to replace them with more enticing options. However, the Traveler and Trailblazer still hold a significant role as the heroes and heroines of their respective stories, venturing into unexplored worlds. Although Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail differ in gameplay, a comparison and contrast can be drawn between the Traveler and the Trailblazer.
Backgrounds of the Traveler and Trailblazer
The Traveler and Trailblazer come from different backgrounds. In Genshin Impact, the Traveler is one of the twins, Aether and Lumine, who are not native to Teyvat. Upon awakening in Teyvat, the Traveler becomes an adventurer alongside Paimon, embarking on a journey to find their missing sibling and facing various challenges throughout the world. On the other hand, the other twin becomes an adversary, working with the Abyss Order. Through resonating with the statues of the Seven Archons, the Traveler gains the ability to control the elements corresponding to these powerful beings.
As for the Trailblazer, their past remains shrouded in mystery. The Trailblazer is awakened by Kafka and Silver Wolf, two Stellaron Hunters, from a strange dimension. Kafka bestows upon the chosen Trailblazer, either Caelus or Stelle, a Stellaron, a dangerous object known as the "Cancer of All Worlds" due to its potential to cause catastrophic events. In Honkai: Star Rail, Kafka parts ways with the Trailblazer to join the Astral Express Crew, while the Trailblazer becomes a member of their team, traversing the galaxy and sealing Stellarons. Additionally, the Trailblazer possesses a unique ability to harness the power of Aeons and follow their Path.
The Traveler and Trailblazer are portrayed as extraordinary heroes in their respective universes. The Traveler has already rescued four Teyvat nations from the clutches of the Fatui, Abyss Order, and various other adversaries. Meanwhile, the Trailblazer has successfully saved the Herta Space Station from the Antimatter Legion and Jarilo-VI from a Stellaron threat. Currently, the Trailblazer and their companions are engaged in a battle against a Stellaron on the Xianzhou Luofu.
Travelers and Trailblazers' Design and Personality
Both Travelers' designs embody a distinctiveness that is not commonly seen in Teyvat. Aether and Lumine's attire exudes an otherworldly and celestial aura, setting them apart. Despite their youthful appearances, the Travelers possess exceptional combat and adventuring skills beyond their age. On the other hand, the Trailblazers' clothing reflects a more conventional style, reminiscent of Honkai: Star Rail's universe, yet they maintain their individuality. Caelus and Stelle, while appearing more mature than the Travelers, do not possess the divine essence that the latter exudes.
Both the Traveler and Trailblazer serve as self-inserts for players, allowing them to project their own personalities onto the characters. However, in the HoYoverse, both characters have opportunities to showcase unique traits and behaviors through cutscenes, interactions, and dialogue. The personalities of both the Traveler and Trailblazer can vary depending on the specific circumstances they find themselves in. For example, they can be serious or sassy in one situation, while appearing silly and playful in another. Although there isn't a significant distinction between them, the Trailblazer displays a wider range of emotions through facial expressions and enjoys more entertaining interactions and dialogue options.
Traveler and Trailblazer From a Gameplay Perspective
In terms of gameplay, the comparison between the Traveler and the Trailblazer is crucial. Both characters are available to every player and hold the role of protagonists. They possess distinct forms, making them versatile and intriguing to utilize. The Traveler, who wields a sword, has the ability to switch between four elements by resonating with the four Statues of the Seven. On the other hand, the Trailblazer currently offers two Paths, Destruction (Physical) and Preservation (Fire), which can be switched through the character screen.
Despite being the protagonist, the Traveler functions more as a sub-dps/support character. Their damage output across all four forms is not strong enough to be considered a primary damage dealer. However, their kit enables them to support other characters with unique abilities and elemental reactions. The Traveler's elements are ranked as follows: Dendro first, Geo second, Electro third, and Anemo last. The Traveler's attributes do not scale impressively, so players are advised to replace them unless they possess the necessary artifacts, weapons, and talent levels to optimize their performance.
Presently, the Trailblazer only has two forms. The Destruction Trailblazer is a Physical unit that wields a cosmic bat, delivering impressive damage. On the other hand, the Preservation Trailblazer is a tank character capable of taunting enemies and inflicting Fire damage using a flaming lance. In comparison to the Traveler, the Trailblazer excels in terms of effectiveness and usefulness due to its ability to fulfill two distinct roles and harness two different elements, making it an excellent choice for creating unique team compositions. However, as the game progresses, players might consider replacing the Trailblazer with other characters to form more diverse or stronger team compositions.
Traveler vs. Trailblazer: Who's the Better Character?
Determining the superior protagonist between the Traveler and Trailblazer is subjective, as it ultimately depends on the players' personal preferences. Some players may favor one over the other due to factors such as their design, gameplay mechanics, or perceived 'personality'. However, in terms of gameplay potential, the Trailblazer appears to offer more promising prospects for future Honkai: Star Rail updates.
The Trailblazer already possesses exceptional abilities that make them valuable and formidable choices in battles. However, players have yet to witness their potential when utilizing different Paths and elements from their arsenal. On the other hand, the Traveler has been somewhat underwhelming in terms of their kits, except for the Dendro element. Players can only hope that the Hydro Traveler will have a more significant role and improved abilities in Fontaine. Ultimately, the preference for one protagonist over the other lies in the hands of the players, as both are well-suited for their respective journeys.
Honkai: Star Rail is currently available on Mobile and PC, with plans for development on PS4 and PS5 versions.
