Highlights
Luffy's progress and power development in the One Piece series have been significantly influenced by his various transformations, many of which have become iconic and admired by fans. Examples of these notable transformations include Nightmare Luffy and Gear Third.
Gear Fourth provides a range of options, including the sturdy Tankman and the dependable Bounceman, which greatly enhance Luffy's strength and flexibility. Snakeman, on the other hand, is a variation of Gear Fourth that boosts Luffy's speed and agility, allowing him to effectively combat fast fighters like Katakuri, demonstrating the versatility of Luffy's transformations.
Luffy, the central character in the One Piece series, is undoubtedly an astonishing creation by Oda. His journey to become the Pirate King has led him to set sail on the Grand Line, where he has accomplished remarkable feats, earning him the title of one of the Yonko of the Sea.
Luffy's immense growth in power can be attributed to the various transformations he has acquired throughout his adventures. Although each transformation holds its own significance, there are a few that are particularly cherished by fans.
7 Nightmare Luffy
Nightmare Luffy is a temporary form acquired by Luffy during the Thriller Bark arc in One Piece. In this state, Luffy absorbed approximately 100 shadows from Moria's victims, resulting in a significant increase in both his power and physical appearance.
Undergoing a drastic transformation, Luffy adopted a gothic appearance reminiscent of Frankenstein. This alteration extended to his power level, allowing him to effortlessly halt Oars's attacks with just one hand. Remarkably, Luffy even managed to defeat Oars single-handedly, showcasing the immense strength of this overpowering transformation.
6 Gear Third
Luffy's incredible mastery of his Devil Fruit has allowed him to develop several Gears, including Gear Third. Similar to Gear Second, Luffy first unveiled Gear Third during the Enies Lobby arc.
With Gear Third, Luffy bites into his thumb to inflate his bones, causing his body to transform into a giant-like form. The resulting power generated by this Gear is immensely strong, with a single punch capable of nearly rendering Rob Lucci unconscious. Over time, Luffy's control over this ability has greatly improved, eliminating any side effects. Furthermore, Luffy has become highly skilled at combining Gear Third with elemental powers, such as flame and electricity.
5 Gear Fourth: Tankman
Luffy developed Gear 4th on the island of Ruskaina during his two-year timeskip. This form of his Gear 4th, known as Tank Man, is a heavily defensive version where Luffy's muscles inflate to the point of appearing obese.
Despite its lack of mobility, Tank Man provides Luffy with an exceptionally strong defense. Even a powerful pirate like Charlotte Cracker, valued at 860 million berries, was unable to break through Tank Man's defenses and was defeated with a single blow. It is worth mentioning that the version of Tank Man used against Cracker was the full version and is a technique that depends on certain conditions. It remains to be seen whether Luffy can access Tank Man without overeating.
4 Gear 4: Bounceman
Luffy has developed another astonishing transformation called Boundman, also known as Bounceman, during the 2-year timeskip. Boundman has become Luffy's preferred form when utilizing Gear Fourth. The first time Luffy tapped into this transformation was in his battle against Doflamingo during the Dressrosa arc. In this form, Luffy greatly inflates his muscles and enhances his rubbery body with Haki, resulting in a remarkable increase in elasticity.
By utilizing compression, Luffy significantly enhances his strength. When used against Doflamingo, Luffy was able to completely overpower him. Over time, this transformation has continued to grow even more powerful.
3 Gear Fourth: Snakeman
Snakeman, an alternate version of Gear 4th developed by Luffy, serves as a strategic way to overcome agile opponents and formidable users of Observation Haki. Unlike Bounceman, this form is more streamlined and significantly reduces Luffy's elasticity. However, it grants him enhanced mobility and speed. Luffy predominantly relies on his fists, known as Pythons, utilizing the air for added momentum. With each rebound, their speed increases exponentially.
Even accomplished masters of Observation Haki, like Katakuri, found it challenging to handle this formidable technique. While Snakeman may not possess the same level of impact as Bounceman, its remarkable swiftness and visually captivating transformation make it incredibly impressive.
2 Gear Second
Without a doubt, Gear Second is one of Luffy's most impressive alterations. Similar to Gear 3rd, Luffy mastered this enhancement during the Enies Lobby arc. In this form, Luffy stimulates his body by accelerating his heart rate, causing sweat to evaporate and creating a steam-like visual effect.
Due to Luffy's rubbery heart, he can withstand the increased blood pressure, resulting in heightened speed, power, and reflexes. Gear Second holds great significance as it served as Luffy's primary transformation for a significant period, and to this day, retains its unique appeal.
1 Gear 5
In his epic battle against Kaido, Luffy reached a new level of power known as Gear 5. To attain this incredible transformation, Luffy had to awaken his dormant Devil Fruit, a process that could only occur through his own death. When assuming this form, Luffy's heart pulsates like resounding drums, earning it the name "Drums of Liberation" by Zunesha. Additionally, Luffy dons a transcendent, all-white appearance, reminiscent of a divine being.
In essence, Luffy becomes a reincarnated Nika when he assumes this form. The abilities bestowed upon him by this transformation are both immense and legendary. Luffy gains the power to inspire laughter, joy, and freedom wherever he journeys, earning the title of the Warrior of Liberation. The only limitations he faces are those imposed by his own imagination, as he possesses the remarkable ability to manifest anything he can envision into reality.
