Spoilers ahead for 1883: Eric Nelsen, one of the stars of the show, reflects on the intense emotions experienced during the filming of his character's death. Originally premiered on Paramount Plus and currently airing on Paramount Network, 1883 chronicles the journey of James Dutton (played by Tim McGraw) and his family as they travel from Texas to Oregon, ultimately creating the iconic Yellowstone ranch in Montana. The series includes several impactful character deaths, but the demise of Nelsen's character, Ennis, in episode 5 stands out as a truly impactful moment.
In a recent interview with TVLine, Nelsen reflects on the experience of filming Ennis' death scene in 1883. Emotions were extremely high on set that day, largely due to Isabel May's powerful portrayal of Elsa Dutton. LaMonica Garrett, who portrays Thomas in the show, explains that the emotion extended not only to Nelsen but also to their other costars who observed from the sidelines. Read Nelsen and Garrett's thoughts on the matter below:
Nelsen: "I underestimated the challenge as an actor. I thought, 'Well, I'll just be lying there the whole time. Everyone else will be the emotional ones, and I can just lay there during the filming process.' But oh my God, it turned out to be the most difficult scene to shoot in the entire show!"
Feeling the intensity of Isabel and the entire cast's emotions during that moment, I struggled to hold back tears. I empathized with Isabel May's pain and experienced every emotion Elsa was going through. She conveyed her distress to me, emotionally unraveling me. It was a challenging task not to shed tears in response to her powerful reactions.
I had anticipated a relaxed and uneventful day, but it turned out to be incredibly emotionally exhausting. Even as I lay there with my eyes closed, the experience took a toll on me.
Garrett: "Sam [Elliott], James [Landry] Hébert, and I were positioned on our horses off camera, silently observing the entire scene unfold before us. As our gazes met, we all shared a common bond - tears welled up in each of our eyes."
Why Ennis' Death Is Important In 1883
Elsa takes center stage in 1883, surpassing both James, portrayed by McGraw, and Shea Brennan, brought to life by Elliott. The series beautifully documents Elsa's transformation from a spirited and inquisitive young woman to a wise and confident cowhand. Throughout their expedition to the West in 1883, Elsa encounters profound love, devastating loss, harrowing violence, and unadulterated freedom. In essence, Elsa experiences a lifetime's worth of events within just a few short weeks.
Ennis' death, although a highly emotional event in 1883, serves as a pivotal moment in Elsa's personal growth. Being her first true love and the person with whom she loses her innocence, it signifies her metamorphosis into womanhood. The intensity of Elsa's love for Ennis amplifies the devastation of his passing, leaving her emotionally and physically hardened. Moreover, Ennis' death represents the harsh and unforgiving reality of life in 1883, a theme deeply embedded in the show. While not the most shocking or impactful demise, it plays a crucial role in Elsa's journey and contributes to the show's memorable nature.
