Over the span of 25 years, the remarkable One Piece manga by author and illustrator Eiichiro Oda has undergone continuous evolution. Fans have occasionally been able to anticipate Oda's next move, but more frequently find themselves at a loss when unexpected developments arise. This is true for both the series' events, the lore within its world, and its overarching plot. As One Piece has progressed, these elements have become inseparably intertwined. Fortunately, fans have overwhelmingly embraced and praised this aspect.
However, certain elements of One Piece's continuously evolving narrative and mythos have not been well-received by fans. One of these aspects is the introduction of Imu in the Reverie arc, which significantly alters fans' perception of the series' eventual conclusion and the identity of the ultimate adversary.

During the initial phases of the One Piece narrative, two crucial opposing forces emerged: Marshall D. Teech, also known as Blackbeard, and Admiral Akainu. These characters played pivotal roles in the tragic demise of Monkey D. Luffy's beloved brother, Portgas D. Ace.
Blackbeard and Akainu were both depicted as formidable and menacing figures, earning their reputation among the most skilled pirates and powerful Marines respectively. Consequently, fans speculated that either one or both of them would ultimately become the main adversaries in the series following the time-skip. This speculation was reinforced by Blackbeard's rise to the position of Yonko among the pirates in the New World, and Akainu's promotion to the esteemed role of Fleet Admiral.
However, the waters have been severely muddied by the introduction of Imu during the Reverie arc in One Piece. The confusion has only intensified with the Egghead Island arc's Reverie flashback, which portrays Imu and the Gorosei as terrifying enemies whose sole goal is to maintain control over the world.

In contrast, the series consistently portrays Luffy as the epitome of freedom and a true embodiment of what it means to be an independent individual. This notion reaches its peak in the Wano arc, unveiling Luffy's genuine Devil Fruit power that symbolizes Sun God Nika, the renowned Warrior of Liberation.
Considering this, it is evident that One Piece is leading towards a showdown between Luffy and Imu as the ultimate confrontation, serving as the grand finale of the series. While Blackbeard and Akainu will undoubtedly have significant roles in the closing stages, it is unlikely that they will be Luffy and his crew's final adversaries.
However, it is important to note that this is purely speculative, as One Piece is still far from reaching its final stages, making it difficult to determine the ultimate antagonist. Nonetheless, the direction the series has taken since the introduction of Imu suggests that he will serve as the final obstacle for Luffy and the Straw Hats.
