Critics have been quick to judge Ezra Miller's running style in The Flash, with some calling it awkward and unnatural, especially when viewed in slow motion. However, there may be more to Miller's performance than meets the eye. Despite the film's promising features, such as the return of Michael Keaton's Batman and the introduction of Supergirl, The Flash has been embroiled in controversy since its inception. From conflicting visions and multiple re-shoots to poor visual effects and Miller's personal struggles, the film has faced numerous challenges. Fortunately, Miller has shed some light on his unique running style, revealing the intense training he underwent to embody the character of Barry Allen.
DC fan Flash Knight shared on Twitter the extensive training that Ezra Miller underwent to embody the Flash, including his ability to travel through time. The InvictusSamaritan created a YouTube video that showcases a side-by-side comparison between Miller's Flash in Zack Snyder's Justice League and a Daoist Master's breathing, stretching, and running techniques. This comparison emphasizes Miller's dedication to the practical elements of his training and research, rather than just a whimsical aesthetic choice. In a 2017 interview with Channel24, Miller revealed that their training included years of Wudang Kung Fu practice and a trip to the Wudang Mountains to train at a traditional Daoist school with a skilled Master to perfect the movements of the fastest man alive. Miller even drew inspiration from animals such as crows, cheetahs, and mongooses, as well as rushing water and lightning. Additionally, Miller trained with choreographers who understood movement in an interesting way and continued with the physical practices of yoga to increase flexibility and breathing techniques. Despite The Flash being an adaptation of the Flashpoint storyline with many moving pieces, Miller's unique and passionate portrayal of the character is sure to impress.
Miller's portrayal of Barry Allen in Zack Snyder's Justice League is commendable, especially when one considers the effort he put into the role to accurately depict the movements of the fastest man alive. Fans who appreciate this attention to detail may enjoy watching Miller's adaptation of the character. However, with the DCU reboot underway, it's uncertain whether Miller will return as the Flash, even though Warner Bros. Discovery has left the door open for his return. In the meantime, fans can look forward to the premiere of The Flash in theaters on June 16, 2023.
