Ashrah’s Tale Began In MK: Deception
Debuting in Mortal Kombat: Deception for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Nintendo GameCube, Ashrah quickly became a beloved character among players. Originally a demon of the Netherrealm, she served under Quan Chi alongside her sisters. However, when she questioned one of Quan Chi's commands, he sent her sister to kill her. During her escape, Ashrah stumbled upon a mysterious sword known as the Kriss. As she used the sword to slay other demons, she noticed that her soul seemed to become purified.
However, the truth behind the sword was more complex. The weapon Ashrah used to vanquish dark creatures was actually a vampire-slaying tool called Datusha, also known as the Bane of the Moroi. Unknown to her, the sword was manipulating her in order to satisfy its own bloodlust. Nevertheless, Ashrah appeared to become less demonic as she continued to wield the sword. In her semi-canon arcade ending in MK: Deception, she ascends from the Netherrealm to Edenia and entrusts the task of retrieving the Kriss to the Konquest protagonist, Shujinko. In MK: Armageddon, she uses the sword to attack the home of the vampire race known as the Moroi, led by Nitara, for better or worse.
Mortal Kombat 1 Intends To Play Off Of Ashrah’s Old Story
Ashrah's story came to an abrupt end with her death in the Battle of Armageddon, but it seems that Mortal Kombat 1 will continue where she left off. While Ashrah generally fights on the side of good, Nitara reveals that she wields the Datusha weapon, which compels her to slay demons and vampires regardless of their true danger. Nitara, on the other hand, is not a saint but strives to protect her people, making Ashrah potentially their greatest threat. Despite any other loyalties, it is likely that these two will spend MK1 determined to kill each other.
The new Ashrah differs from the old one, with Quan Chi's absence being one notable change. Ashrah herself decided to renounce her corrupt past after witnessing other realms, though it is unclear whether her inner purity and newfound powers in Mortal Kombat 1 are a result of the Kriss or genuine self-improvement. It remains unknown if further enlightenment awaits her upon completing her purification or if it is all in her mind. Aligned with Liu Kang, Ashrah is unlikely to fall back into her old habits easily and should prove to be a formidable ally against any threats that arise in Mortal Kombat 1, except when she is busy mercilessly killing demons and vampires.
