The Rise and Fall of the First Jedi
Game of Thrones directors David Benioff and Dan Weiss were set to direct the first movie in a planned trilogy detailing the story of the first Jedi ever and the start of the Order.
James Mangold and the Prime Jedi.
In an interview with James Hibberd and The Hollywood Reporter, Benioff said, 'We wanted to do The First Jedi. Basically how the Jedi Order came to be, why it came to be, the first lightsaber...' Weiss then added, 'And we were annoyed as hell when [Rian Johnson] called his movie The Last Jedi, he completely destroyed the obvious title for what we were working on.'
Benioff and Weiss revealed details about the canceled Star Wars movie they were set to direct, which was announced in 2018 and canceled in 2019 due to creative differences and other factors.
The concept of following the origins of the Jedi Order survived the cancelation, as it now lives on as James Mangold's Dawn of the Jedi, set 25,000 years before the events of the Skywalker saga and prequel trilogy. Mangold's movie is going to explore how the ancient Jedi Order worked, and could show a time when Jedi were more receptive to the dark side of the Force in service of balance.
While Benioff and Weiss's plans for a Star Wars Jedi origin movie were scrapped for creative differences, their idea had a good foundation. Because of that, Dawn of the Jedi will still tell the tale of the ancient Jedi and how the Order came to be.
The Directors' Vision for the First Jedi
In 2018, it was announced that Benioff and Weiss were set to direct the first movie in a planned trilogy detailing the story of the first Jedi ever and the start of the Order, but the project was canceled in 2019.
The cancelation of the movie was attributed to several reasons, including Benioff and Weiss' exclusive deal with Netflix and the negative reception of Game of Thrones season 8. However, the ultimate reason for the cancelation was creative differences with Lucasfilm.
Benioff and Weiss wanted to explore the origins of the Jedi Order, the creation of the first lightsaber, and the reasons behind the establishment of the Jedi Order.
The Future of the Jedi Origins Story
The movie Dawn of the Jedi, now taking the place of the canceled Star Wars movie by Benioff and Weiss, will explore the origins of the Jedi Order 25,000 years before the events of the Skywalker saga and prequel trilogy.
James Mangold's movie, Dawn of the Jedi, will delve into the ancient Jedi Order, possibly showing a time when the Jedi were more receptive to the dark side of the Force in service of balance.
Despite the cancellation of Benioff and Weiss's Star Wars movie, the concept of the first Jedi and the origins of the Jedi Order will still be explored in Dawn of the Jedi, continuing the legacy of the ancient Jedi and the establishment of the Order.
