Games, especially indie games, are often created with passion and devotion. Like any other form of media, game developers aim to share their creation with others and leave a lasting impact on those who experience the game. The upcoming release of LISA: Definitive Edition presents a unique opportunity for a solo developer to articulate his intended message to the world.
Collaborating with publisher Serenity Forge, Austin Jorgensen took the opportunity to reflect upon the reception of his previous works, LISA the Painful and LISA the Joyful, and refine the message he wanted to convey. According to Jorgensen, the game is not only a form of entertainment but also a means of expressing his thoughts and ideas. As the release of the Definitive Edition approaches, Jorgensen sat down with Game Rant for an interview discussing themes of depression, human nature, and the intersection of video games with the realm of high art.
The games featured in LISA: Definitive Edition drew significant inspiration from the compelling storytelling found in Naughty Dog's highly acclaimed game, The Last of Us. In fact, the central relationship in LISA was modified to pay homage to the profound bond between Joel and Ellie. This realization of the narrative power of video games was a game-changer for Jorgensen, who previously viewed games more as playthings rather than meaningful experiences. The Last of Us, and now even the accompanying television series, have challenged traditional perceptions and opened people's eyes to the extraordinary storytelling potential within video games.
According to Jorgensen, working on the development of LISA: Definitive Edition has offered him an opportunity to deeply reflect on his role as a video game developer and the essence of artistic expression. He emphasizes that it is not about conveying a message directly, but rather about guiding the audience to perceive the world from specific vantage points. Much like The Last of Us, LISA can be considered a form of art.
I find it slightly cliché to claim that there's a message in this, but I appreciate it when media attempts to convey a message. A preacher or coach is someone who can be straightforward and express their thoughts without hesitation, as it is part of their role. As a game developer, I also consider myself to be somewhat of an artist. And in doing so, I believe that when trying to communicate a message, it cannot be done directly. Instead, it must be concealed through symbolism, allowing individuals to uncover it themselves. I hope that it holds significance for people because that is my intention.
The message that Jorgensen aimed to address in his work delves deeply into the human experience. LISA tackles topics such as mental health and suicide, which are crucial aspects, and the game strives to shed light on these subjects in a meaningful way. While he didn't delve into specifics, he emphasized the statement his game makes on the matter: there is assistance available for those in need. According to Jorgensen, LISA is a game that explores the essence of being human and the concept of personhood.
With the addition of the LISA: Definitive Edition's new content, the intention behind the game becomes clearer within this particular context. Although the game delves into dark subjects that held significant meaning, it was primarily the player's responsibility to decipher that significance. The introduction of the new content is expected to shed light on the creator's intended message.
Ultimately, as a solo developer, what truly matters to me is the opportunity to connect with someone through the meaning, reflections on pain and hope, and art that I create.
"I take great pride and have high hopes that this content can be truly meaningful and provide assistance to someone in need. Ultimately, my greatest hope is that it can reach individuals who require guidance or support, as opposed to just providing entertainment. While enjoyment is important, my sincere desire is to offer a helping hand or a source of affirmation. It is essential to acknowledge that there are resources available, different perspectives to consider, and a willingness to be open-minded."
LISA: Definitive Edition releases July 18 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
