Final Fantasy 16 distinguishes itself from previous titles in the series by returning to its roots, incorporating iconic elements and themes. Among these notable features are the prominent presence of Eikons and Mothercrystals, which hold significant importance in the game's storyline. After the initial destruction of a mothercrystal, players are faced with a formidable adversary known as Typhon the Transgressor. However, as the plot unfolds, Final Fantasy 16 takes unexpected twists and reveals a complex truth surrounding Typhon and its role. Throughout the expansive campaign, the identity of Typhon and its impact on the narrative stand out as some of the most peculiar revelations in the game.
The player assumes the role of Clive Rosfield, a dominant figure in Final Fantasy 16's universe. Dominants, like Clive, possess the rare ability to control Eikons, the summoning entities in the game. While numerous dominants are employed by their respective nations to engage in conflicts over resources and territories, Clive is driven by a different objective: to liberate humanity from the relentless power struggles by obliterating the mothercrystals. These colossal crystal deposits are the source of magic for both humans and dominants. Initially, Clive's mission may seem straightforward, but the emergence of an ancient foe signals a much grander scheme unfolding in the shadows.
The Battle with Typhon at Drake's Head
After the destruction of the first Mothercrystal in Final Fantasy 16, known as Drake's Head, Clive and his party believe their mission in the Empire of Sanbreque to be complete. However, their tranquility is interrupted when a temporal rift suddenly opens behind them, launching an attack on the group. In the chaos, Cid is gravely injured and Clive is forcefully pulled into the rift by an enormous hand belonging to Typhon, who mistakenly refers to him as Mythos. Typhon proceeds to summon enemies to test Clive's abilities before engaging him in a one-on-one battle. Witnessing Clive's impressive display of power, Typhon duplicates itself in the form of clones, combining with the original to transform into Typhon the Transgressor. Utilizing his Eikonic abilities, Clive manages to defeat this version of Typhon, but his victory is short-lived.
As Clive emerges from the Temporal Rift, he finds himself accompanied by Final Fantasy 16's true antagonist, Ultima. Ultima tries to merge with Clive, claiming that he is a vessel for something far greater. Yet, Clive resists and is ultimately saved by his brother Joshua. The endgame of Final Fantasy 16 reveals that Ultima is the creator of all humanity, the Eikons, and the mothercrystals. By dividing its soul among the mothercrystals, Ultima's essence lay dormant until it discovered a suitable physical host in the form of Mythos. With Mythos possessing the potential to unleash a spell capable of both destroying and recreating the entirety of Valisthea.
Typhon's True Identity Revealed
Final Fantasy 16 reveals that Clive initiated Ultima's return by destroying the first Mothercrystal at Drake's Head. However, before Clive's ultimate battle, Ultima tested his worth by pulling him into a realm and taking on the form of the fallen colossus Typhon. Ultima manipulated Typhon's body and magical abilities to assess Clive as a potential vessel. When Clive demonstrated potential, Ultima gathered other remnants of itself to create Typhon the Transgressor. This ability was later utilized in the final battle when Ultima merged with the remaining remnants to become the powerful entity known as Ultimalius.
While initially appearing as one of the earliest Eikon battles in Final Fantasy 16, Typhon is actually a manipulated corpse wielded by Ultima to test Clive's worthiness. It does not exist in the time of the game. Despite the immense power Typhon possesses and its role in significant deaths within the title, it is merely a tool used by Ultima. Ultimately, Clive proves his worth by using his human will to defeat Ultima, the Origin, and eliminate the dark influence of the mothercrystals on humanity.
