Donald Mustard, the chief creative officer at Epic and the mastermind behind the Fortnite Battle Royale storyline, is stepping down from his role. This transition comes at an intriguing moment for Fortnite, as the Battle Royale narrative has been chaotic for over a year and has only worsened with each new season in Chapter 4.
To clarify, I am not attributing this disorder solely to Mustard. It appears unlikely that the storyline we witnessed unfolding was entirely his responsibility. Rather, like many video games, the narrative has taken a backseat to numerous other considerations. Whenever Epic alters its plans, the writers must adapt, even if maintaining coherence becomes a challenge. While Fortnite's story had a Marvel-like charm in previous years, where you could at least follow the overarching plot from season to season, this is no longer the case.
Epic's secretive nature leaves us without concrete information on the various adjustments they may have made to their plans. In fact, there is no solid evidence to suggest any pivoting occurred at all.
However, a recent Fortnite leak could provide a significant hint: it suggests that the present season, Last Resort, featuring new map locations and heist activities, might have originally been intended for Chapter 4 Season 2 in March of this year. While this remains unverified, it offers a possible explanation for the prolonged fragmentation of the Fortnite storyline.
The details provided were obtained through data mining, rather than from an insider at Epic or another game development studio involved with Last Resort. According to these details, certain files pertaining to the new major locations in Last Resort are labeled as "s24," indicating that they belong to Season 24 of Fortnite. The issue lies in the fact that the current season, Chapter 4 Season 4, is actually Season 26.
While this information doesn't serve as definitive evidence that Chapter 4 Season 2 was intended to be a heist season, it does align with logical reasoning. Each season in Chapter 4 has been self-contained, not immediately continuing from the events of the prior season, despite typically offering hints about what was to come next.
Returning to Chapter 4 Season 1, known as Oathbound, we encounter a character called The Ageless who serves as the boss within The Citadel. The Ageless represents the founder of the Imagined Order and plays a significant role in this season. Accompanying The Ageless is Rift Warden Stellan, who is instructed to establish a portal under the guidance of the Shapeless Man. This portal is of great concern to the AI A.M.I.E. due to its ability to connect with alternate realities. A.M.I.E. desires to utilize the portal to rescue The Scientist, one of the members of the Seven who was consumed by Chrome at the onset of Chapter 3 Season 4. Upon the completion of A.M.I.E.'s quest, Stellan informs others that the portal's coordinates have been tampered with and locked, hinting at potential consequences.
Meanwhile, Season 1 concludes with the Most Wanted event. During this event, players assist the criminal faction known as the Most Wanted in stealing valuable assets from vaults owned by their rival group, the Cold Blooded. This event lays the groundwork for the subsequent heist-themed Last Resort storyline, which we will delve into later on.
Moving on to Season 2, we witnessed the unexpected descent of Mega City from the sky, despite landing on the opposite side of the island from the original rift. As a result, the Japan biome became part of the island. However, since then there has been no mention or reference to A.M.I.E., Stellan, the Most Wanted, or Cold Blooded. In Season 3, there was a brief mention of The Ageless, but it offered no substantial insights. The only connection to the Seven since Season 1 is a calendar in Eclipsed Estates featuring each member's symbol.
Throughout Season 2, the main story revolved around uniting various crime syndicates within Mega City – not the Most Wanted or Cold Blooded – in order to combat the imminent threat presented by Triarch Nox, a mysterious and sinister individual leading the Unseen syndicate. The motive behind Nox's plan to wreak havoc on the island remains undisclosed. Towards the end of the season, frequent earthquakes began to jolt the island, and as Season 3 commenced, a significant portion of the land collapsed, revealing an overgrown jungle beneath.
Slone, a once-absent antagonist, was discovered conducting archaeological research in an underground area. Her aim was to gather knowledge about the island's ancient inhabitants, who possessed remarkable power, before they departed for space. However, the focus on Slone's activities with the syndicates has since dissipated, rendering her and these characters irrelevant.
Now, we find ourselves in the midst of the actual heist season. The primary antagonist is a time-traveling vampire named Kado Thorne, who has been pilfering valuable artifacts from the island's history. As players, our mission is to infiltrate Kado Thorne's vaults and retrieve these stolen items. Notably, Slone has yet to make an appearance this season. Neither the Cold Blooded faction nor the Most Wanted group are present, which is rather perplexing as having a vampire as the leader of the Cold Blooded faction would have made logical sense.
Have you grasped the concept yet? Each season in this chapter has essentially functioned as a standalone story that bears little or no connection to the previous one. With every new season, it seems to veer off in a random direction that lacks coherence. Rather than feeling like a collection of anthological tales, it appears as though the game's long-standing serialized plot is being haphazardly patched together amidst a year of significant reshuffling within Fortnite, for reasons undisclosed to the public. The notion that Epic Games may have replaced a planned season with an entirely different one is quite appealing under these circumstances. It provides an easy explanation for the disjointedness of the story.
There are valid reasons to consider this theory. The name "Cold Blooded" would aptly suit a syndicate of vampires. However, the primary reason lies in the fact that Kado Thorne's house is located where the portal was in Season 1, while all the new attractions on the map added in Season 2 were positioned at the opposite end of the island. Although we lack explicit confirmation on any of this, there is ample lingering evidence that suggests its validity, even if we may never uncover the underlying reasons behind the season reshuffling.
Despite the underlying cause, it is evident that the issue persists: Fortnite's storyline has become increasingly chaotic and no longer follows a coherent trajectory from season to season. Furthermore, Donald Mustard, the individual responsible for overseeing this aspect of Fortnite, is now departing. The future developments remain uncertain to me.
