Rick and Morty season 7 has returned, much to the excitement of fans. The newest batch of episodes is now available on Adult Swim. This season has been eagerly awaited, as it continues the ongoing search for Rick Prime. However, what makes the premiere episode even more intriguing is the fact that it features a recasting of Rick and Morty. In episode 1, Rick takes it upon himself to intervene in Mr. Poopybutthole's life, and in order to do so, he gathers his oldest friends for support. The group embarks on a wild party, revealing a different side to familiar characters from the Rick and Morty universe.
5 Mr. Poopybutthole
The first surprising reappearance in season 7, episode 1 of Rick and Morty is none other than Mr. Poopybutthole. It is revealed that Mr. Poopybutthole has been residing with the Smith family ever since his wife left him, leading him to develop a toxic reliance on drugs and alcohol. Since Beth shot him in previous seasons, Mr. Poopybutthole's life has taken a downward spiral, and although the Smiths were initially understanding, they now want him out of their house. Consequently, they assign Rick the task of organizing an intervention for his old friend, but it quickly transforms into a drug-fueled endeavor to win Mr. Poopybutthole's wife back.
4 Gearhead
Rick enlists Gearhead as his first choice to assist with the intervention, despite the character's initial reluctance. Among all the characters featured in the episode, Gearhead experiences the most unfortunate circumstances. A Predator brutally decapitates him and forces his mechanical genitalia into his mouth. Preceding this appearance, Gearhead only made a brief cameo in season 5's "Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort." Since season 3, he has not played a significant role in any storyline. Following the season 7 premiere, Gearhead is witnessed returning to Gear World in order to repair his damaged body. However, it remains a possibility that he will make future appearances in upcoming episodes.
3 Squanchy
2 Birdperson
Squanchy, one of the beloved supporting characters in Rick and Morty, makes his return in the season 7 premiere. Rick and Gearhead pay a visit to Squanchy's residence with the intention of enlisting him for an intervention, and surprisingly, Squanchy agrees to participate. The whereabouts of Squanchy since his last appearance in season 5 remain a mystery, resulting in Rick and Gearhead engaging in a heated debate about whether he was still alive. However, viewers catch a glimpse of Squanchy undergoing a startling transformation into the monstrous version of himself, a form previously seen in earlier episodes, as he strives to harness this power and confront the Predator. Poopybutthole discloses that Squanchy took the initiative to seek rehabilitation after the event, but unfortunately, he eventually experienced a relapse.
In the episode, Rick's closest companion, Birdperson, also makes an appearance as the third individual recruited for the intervention. Since their last encounter, Birdperson has been caring for his daughter and his life has mostly returned to normal, leaving behind his time as an evil cyborg. However, Birdperson faces challenges in preventing his daughter from discovering the Federation. Participating in the intervention offers him a temporary respite from his responsibilities as a father. Though typically more reserved than Rick's other friends, Birdperson still manages to enjoy himself throughout the episode. Ultimately, he returns home to continue nurturing his daughter.
1 Gene
In Rick and Morty season 7, episode 1, Gene makes a surprising appearance as the final character. Some viewers may not even remember who he is. Gene is the Smiths' neighbor but is not typically considered a friend of Rick's. However, Rick explains that the group needs someone sober for the intervention, and Gene is the only sober person he knows. Despite this, Gene ends up abandoning his sobriety throughout the night and has a wild time with his shotgun. Bringing back Gene and other supporting characters demonstrates the dedication of Rick and Morty season 7 to utilizing its cast.
New episodes of Rick and Morty are released on Sundays on Adult Swim.
