The title characters of Rick & Morty season 7 finally have their new replacements disclosed. Justin Roiland, co-creator of the popular Adult Swim comedy series, had been the voice for both Rick and Morty since the show's premiere in 2013. However, due to allegations of domestic abuse and sexual assault, Roiland was let go from Rick & Morty this year, subsequently leading to the recasting of his characters. The identities of the new actors were kept confidential until the season 7 premiere on Sunday, October 15. In the recent debut of Rick & Morty season 7 on Adult Swim, the new main performers were introduced. Ian Cardoni has assumed the role of Rick, while Harry Belden now lends his voice to Morty. Notably, their names were included in the opening credits, which is a significant departure from a previous version of the credits released nearly a month ago that intentionally omitted the stars' names.
Breaking Down Rick & Morty's Season 7 Recastings
Roiland faced charges of domestic violence and false imprisonment in January, related to an incident involving his ex-girlfriend in 2020. Despite Roiland denying the charges, they were later dismissed by the court. Nevertheless, the consequences were severe - Adult Swim terminated his employment and revealed their plans to replace the actors for Rick and Morty. Similarly, Roiland's other shows, Solar Opposites and Koala Man, also aimed to distance themselves from him.
Dan Stevens replaced Roiland as the voice of Korvo in Solar Opposites. Although Rick & Morty didn't announce the names of their new cast, Adult Swim's strategy was understandable. Roiland's portrayal of Rick and Morty has gained immense popularity and news of his replacement sparked numerous jokes, imitations, and speculation. Adult Swim wanted to generate hype around these new castings. While Cardoni and Belden may not be well-known at the moment, their roles in Resident Alien, WrestleMania, Chicago Med, and Proven Innocent will soon bring them greater fame. With their official casting in Rick & Morty season 7, they will finally receive the recognition they deserve for taking on these beloved animated characters.
