What the Cast of Modern Family Has Said About Doing a Reboot or Spinoff
ABC
Since Modern Family concluded its series in 2020, fans and even some of the cast members have been eager for a revival.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, known for his role as Mitchell Pritchett, sparked speculation by posting a photo inside the Dunphy family home on his Instagram Story in May 2024. He captioned it with, "Haven’t seen this view in awhile."
The ABC sitcom premiered in 2009 and followed three generations of a family in suburban California. The main cast included father Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill), daughter Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen), and son Mitchell (Ferguson).
Jay married Gloria (Sofia Vergara) on the show, and they lived with her son Manny (Rico Rodriguez) and their son, Joe (Jeremy Maguire). Claire shared three kids with husband Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell): Haley (Sarah Hyland), Alex (Ariel Winter), and Luke (Nolan Gould). Mitchell and his husband, Cameron (Eric Stonestreet), adopted children of their own: Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) and Rexford.

Sofia Vergara
Vergara expressed her willingness to return to her role as Gloria, stating that she would do it without hesitation. She shared her excitement during an interview on the "Awards Chatter" podcast in May 2024 when asked about a potential Modern Family revival. She mentioned, "Of course, I would do it."
She also mentioned that she would be interested in reprising her role simply for the experience of it. Unsure of whether it would turn out well or not, she stated, "just for the experience of doing it again."
Ed O’Neill
Vergara had previously expressed hesitation about a reboot, mentioning that they may need more time. However, during a January 2024 interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she joked about the time constraints due to O'Neill's age.
O’Neill is open to the idea of making a comeback. In an interview with TV Insider in May 2024, he mentioned, “I mean, I am open to it. I like everybody involved, so I wouldn’t be the guy who says no if everyone else wants to. I wouldn’t do that.”

Sarah Hyland
Hyland hasn’t made a decision yet about returning. In April 2024, she told Variety, “Maybe. I’m not ruling it out completely, but I’m also not committing right away.”
She mentioned that she would like to understand Haley's storyline before committing to a reunion project. Hyland expressed, “If there was a reunion, I would want to see Haley succeed in her career because that's a part of her character that was left unfinished. I really admired her hard work and creativity, and I miss that aspect of her character.”
Aubrey Anderson-Emmons
Before agreeing to a revival, Anderson-Emmons had one condition. In an interview with Daily Mail in February 2024, she mentioned, "They really haven’t said much about anything. But my mom asked me, ‘Would you want to do that?’ And I thought about it and I don’t know."
She continued, "If it did happen, I would probably be out of high school. Honestly, that would be fine with me, but I want to stay in high school because I only have less than a year and a half left."
Anderson-Emmons mentioned that she would be "definitely interested" if the script was "good" and her TV dads agreed, but she also emphasized that school is her priority. She added, "unless something great comes along."
“I feel like the finale left possibilities and I think that’s why people are always talking about a spinoff of the Tucker-Pritchard family,” she said.

Ariel Winter
Winter expressed that the cast would be enthusiastic about working together again, but she believes that the show concluded perfectly.
In an interview with PopCulture.com in June 2022, Winter suggested that a potential collaboration would likely need to be a spinoff focusing on where the characters are currently. She mentioned that continuing from where the show left off might be challenging due to the aging of the cast. Winter acknowledged that while a reboot may not be the best approach, anything is possible as time progresses.
She added, "I'm not sure if that will happen. You never really know. Everyone felt like it was the end, but we were okay with it. We were sad, of course. We enjoyed working here and with each other, but we had a good run. We had a great time and now we can end it on a positive note that feels right."
Editor's P/S:
The Modern Family cast members have expressed varying degrees of interest in a potential revival of the beloved sitcom. Sofia Vergara and Ed O'Neill appear enthusiastic about returning, while Sarah Hyland and Aubrey Anderson-Emmons have reservations. Ariel Winter acknowledges the cast's fondness for each other but believes the show ended satisfyingly.
Despite the mixed reactions, the possibility of a revival remains open. Fans continue to clamor for a reunion, and the cast members have a history of surprising viewers. If the right script and timing come together, a Modern Family revival could bring the Pritchetts, Dunphys, and Tuckers back to our screens. However, it is crucial to respect the cast's wishes and ensure that any potential revival does not compromise the show's legacy.
