The Writers of Stranger Things have addressed a common nitpick regarding the age of the actors compared to their characters. The popular series is set in the 1980s and follows a group of kids in Hawkins, Indiana on supernatural adventures. Despite the show being on air since 2016, spanning from 1983 to 1986, the actors have naturally aged, resulting in frequent online criticism and mockery. However, the official Stranger Things writers room Twitter account, known as "stranger writers," has responded to these criticisms with a post.
The Age Discrepancy In Stranger Things Explained
: They shared a tweet featuring a genuine 1989 video of high school students, in response to those who claim the actors in Stranger Things appear too mature for their characters. The underlying suggestion is that the actors from Stranger Things would blend in naturally with the individuals shown in the video, especially due to the prevalent hairstyles of the 1980s which tended to make teenagers appear older than they truly were. The Netflix series Stranger Things will conclude with its fifth season. Season 4 left viewers on the edge of their seats, but the writers have confirmed that there will be a time jump in the upcoming season. However, the progress of the series is also being affected by the ongoing strikes among writers and actors in Hollywood. These strikes, aimed at securing fair compensation, have caused a delay in the June production as it is uncertain when these strikes will end. As a result, there is currently no confirmed start date for production on season 5.
Production is likely to occur sometime in the next year, coinciding with the conclusion of the main branch of the series. This timing is beneficial, considering that the age difference between the characters may have already been stretched to the limits. Although the timeline for Stranger Things season 5 remains undisclosed, during the filming of season 4 in 2020, the younger characters (Eleven, Mike, Will, Lucas, Dustin, and Max) were approximately 14 or 15 years old, despite the actors' ages ranging from 16 (Noah Schnapp) to 19 (Caleb McLaughlin).
The older teenagers (Nancy, Jonathan, Robin, and Steve), who range in age from 17 to 19, face an even greater age discrepancy. In 2020, the youngest of the group, Maya Hawke, was 22, while the oldest, Joe Keery, was 28. Although a time jump could potentially mitigate some of these gaps, now that the older teenagers are in their 30s, it will be increasingly challenging for them to convincingly portray high school students beyond season 5.
