Luffy recently faced Kaido in an epic battle, where he revealed his most formidable gear, Gear Fifth, showcasing his immense growth and untapped potential for future gears.
Although there are speculations about Luffy obtaining additional gears to confront stronger adversaries, he has declared Gear Fifth as his ultimate transformation. Instead, he intends to concentrate on honing his existing abilities and elevating his Haki to a superior level.
Monkey D. Luffy, the ambitious man aspiring to become the Pirate King, embarked on his journey starting from the East Blue, widely recognized as one of the least dangerous seas in the storyline. Nonetheless, as he ventured from the East Blue towards the formidable Grand Line, he encountered more formidable adversaries, and his own level of strength proved insufficient against them.
In order to enhance his capability to vanquish mighty opponents and safeguard his crew, Luffy honed his abilities and acquired new forms and powers known as gears. These gears enabled him to maximize the potential of his devil fruit abilities as he clashed with increasingly powerful foes. The recent development in the One Piece anime unveiled Luffy's acquisition of a new gear, Gear Fifth, which stands as his most potent gear to date. Considering Luffy's awakening of Gear Fifth during his intense confrontation with Kaido, eager fans can only speculate on the possibility of further gears awaiting him.
The Evolution Of Luffy’s Gears
After showcasing his base form, Luffy demonstrated his Gear Second and Gear Third abilities during the Enies Lobby arc. Gear Second enhances his strength and speed by increasing the flow of his blood. In the same fight against CP9, Luffy displayed Gear Third, which allows him to inflate his bones by blowing air into them, granting him immense power. By utilizing Gear Second, Gear Third, and Haki, Luffy successfully defeated most of his opponents. However, when faced with the formidable warlord Donquioxte Doflamingo, Luffy had to resort to his newly developed technique, Gear Four. Through his two-year training with Dark King Rayleigh, Luffy learned to inflate his muscles instead of his bones and envelop his body with Armament Haki. After coating his body with Armament Haki, Luffy takes on one of three forms: Boundman, Tankman, or Snakeman.
Luffy’s Current Gear Fifth
Luffy's Boundman form transforms him into a rubber ball, granting him incredible abilities. By retracting his arms, he unleashes devastating blows upon his foes, while retracting his legs allows him to soar through the air with remarkable elasticity. Not only that, but Luffy's defensive and offensive skills are greatly enhanced in this form. In contrast, his Tankman and Snakeman forms specialize in defense and offense respectively. With Snakeman, Luffy's attacks possess the remarkable ability to alter their trajectory mid-air.
In his epic battle against Kaido, Luffy underwent a transformative awakening of his devil fruit. Surprisingly, the fruit that had been long believed to be the Gomu Gomu no Mi turned out to be the Hito Hito no Mi, model: Nika. This awakening bestowed upon Luffy extraordinary powers, far surpassing the mere elasticity of a rubber human. He became the embodiment of liberation and the revered sun god Nika, fearlessly engaging in combat. Reaching the pinnacle of his abilities, Luffy harnessed Gear Fifth, enabling him to manipulate his surroundings akin to the abilities of a paramecia. His utilization of Gear Fifth was dubbed as 'the most preposterous power in the entire world' due to its seemingly boundless potential and limitless possibilities.
Will Luffy Get More Gears In The Future?
Luffy always reveals new gears when he encounters an adversary he cannot overcome. Consequently, his gears have evolved out of necessity. In order to confront and defeat Kaido, Luffy tapped into Gear Fifth. However, since Kaido is not the ultimate antagonist in the story, fans speculate that Luffy will require additional gears to face even stronger foes.
While this possibility exists to some extent, Luffy has declared Gear Fifth as his final transform. Furthermore, as evidenced by his previous gears, Luffy needs time to adapt to his newfound power. When it comes to utilizing Haki and Gear Fifth, Luffy is far from reaching his prime. In order to confront more formidable adversaries, Luffy could perfect his mastery of Gear Fifth and elevate his Haki to another level. As mentioned by Kaido, although Luffy has the ability to infuse conquerors' Haki into his punches, he still needs substantial refinement in his execution of this technique. Since Luffy has claimed that awakening his devil fruit power represents his peak, it is unlikely that he will acquire additional gears in the future. Instead, he may simply develop unique forms within Gear Fifth, akin to what he accomplished with Gear Fourth, to combat stronger enemies.
