Elizabeth Banks, star and executive producer, has given an update on the upcoming sequel series Bedrock, based on The Flintstones. The animated series will follow the adult Pebbles as she navigates life in the prehistoric town. The show will also feature familiar faces from The Flintstones cast, including Stephen Root, Amy Sedaris, Nicole Byer, Joe Lo Truglio, and Manny Jacinto. Banks shared in a recent interview that despite limited updates, the series is still in development. She also hinted that the tone of Bedrock could be similar to popular modern animated shows like The Simpsons.

The Flintstones Is No Stranger To Bold New Reimaginings
. Personally, I'm quite enthusiastic about it as I indulge in Pebbles. Our main focus is on creating a platform that promotes co-viewing, allowing parents to watch it with their kids. While we aim to touch upon mature themes similar to renowned shows like The Simpsons or South Park, our content will maintain a family-friendly essence. Speaking of which, I must admit I even let my children watch South Park… [Chuckles]Since its debut in 1960, The Flintstones has captivated audiences with its entertaining storyline. Over the years, the series has undergone multiple intriguing reinterpretations. In 1994, director Brian Levant brought the beloved family into the realm of live-action with The Flintstones. This was followed by the prequel The Flintstones In Viva Rock Vegas in the 2000s. Levant, being an avid fan of the original animated series, worked with a team of talented sitcom writers to ensure that both films stayed true to the essence of the classic family. These adaptations successfully modernized the iconic Bedrock families, while still staying faithful to the core premise of the show, albeit with a more mature twist.
Other attempts to modernize The Flintstones have also been explored in different mediums, resulting in a series that deviates from its original form. DC Comics' The Flintstones comic series, which began in 2016, took a surprisingly realistic and gritty approach, portraying Fred and Barney as war veterans questioning their lives. The inclusion of storylines involving political corruption and religion added depth to the fictional town of Bedrock. While this comic does revisit the iconic characters, its more mature art styles and themes resonate more strongly with viewers who grew up with The Flintstones.
In a recent discussion, Banks reassured fans that the Bedrock series is still in progress and addressed concerns regarding its direction. The 2022 adult animated series Velma faced criticism for its reimagining of the beloved Scooby-Doo franchise. However, Banks' comments suggest that while Bedrock may adopt a more adult tone, similar to The Simpsons, it will still maintain its roots as a family-oriented sitcom.
