Charlie's Angels 3 Possibilities Refueled: The OG Director Returns After 19 Years to Unite Generations in an Exciting New Adventure!

Summary

Director McG is open to returning to helm a Charlie's Angels 3, despite the cancellation of previous plans for a third film.

McG displayed his fondness for the initial cast members of his films, specifically Drew Barrymore, who defended him during his close call with termination.

The prospect of a fresh film could unite various generations of Angels, offering an opportunity for the original stars and Elizabeth Banks' crew to join forces.

Director McG has expressed his openness to directing Charlie's Angels 3, almost two decades after previous plans for a third and fourth film were cancelled. The original films, released in 2000 and 2003, starred Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu as the trio of women working for the Townsend Agency. Despite the initial announcement of two more films after the sequel, those plans were ultimately abandoned in 2004, paving the way for the 2019 reboot directed by Elizabeth Banks.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, McG shared his willingness to return to the franchise that launched his career. He acknowledged his approval of Banks taking over the helm for her own film, but expressed his fondness for the three stars of his movies. He particularly credited Barrymore, who defended him during a challenging time when he faced the possibility of being fired from production. See his comments below.

I was delighted to witness Elizabeth Banks taking charge and doing what she did, which was enjoyable. There is often talk about that. I am eager to discuss the possibility of a sequel with Drew, Cameron, and Lucy, but at the same time, I am willing to pass on the responsibility. I adore the Tim Burton Batman movies and the new Batman movies. It's like having someone who carries the legacy and can pass on the torch.

Who knows? Perhaps we still have one more story in us that would captivate the audience if the opportunity arises. I have immense affection for all three of them. They played a crucial role in my career growth. They supported me when I was a novice filmmaker, even when I faced the risk of being fired multiple times. Drew stood up for me, and I will forever be grateful to her. And of course, those three individuals are truly one of a kind. They are irreplaceable.

How Charlie’s Angels 3 Could Serve To Unite The Generations

Originally intended as a complete revamp of the series, Banks' film surprised viewers by revealing itself as a loosely connected sequel set in the same universe as both McG's movies and the original TV series. The Los Angeles office of the Townsend Agency also showcased photographs of Jaclyn Smith reprising her role as Kelly Garrett, alongside her co-stars Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Cheryl Ladd, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu. As a nod to McG's films, the 2019 Charlie's Angels movie also incorporated several costumes as Easter eggs.

Given the recent film's decision to maintain the franchise's continuity, it is possible that a third installment led by McG could unite Diaz, Barrymore, and Liu with Banks' team of Angels. This would continue the theme of intergenerational collaboration among the Angels, with Kelly Garrett potentially making another cameo appearance. With three generations of strong women, a truly intergenerational Charlie's Angels movie would pay homage to the franchise's legacy while delivering something fresh.

Regarding the possibility of a new movie, Liu expressed her desire to return to the Charlie's Angels franchise earlier this year, stating that working with Barrymore and Diaz would be enjoyable. Barrymore, who has been a producer for all three films since 2000, has also revealed her interest in making the movies into a trilogy. McG may now have a genuine opportunity to come back and make Charlie's Angels 3 with a larger cast.
