Gamers have been eagerly anticipating the release of Avowed, the upcoming RPG from Obsidian Entertainment that takes place in the same universe as their popular Pillars of Eternity series. The newly released gameplay trailer has given fans a taste of what's to come, showcasing a first-person action-RPG that many are comparing to The Elder Scrolls. With Obsidian's recent success in the first-person RPG genre with games like The Outer Worlds and Grounded, there's a lot of excitement surrounding Avowed. The game's impressive visuals and promising gameplay mechanics are sure to satisfy the cravings of Elder Scrolls fans who are eagerly awaiting the next installment in the series.
Avowed Feels Like A True Iteration On The Elder Scrolls
Bethesda's Creation Engine has been the source of technical issues in their recent RPGs, including Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76. Despite Starfield's upgrade to the Creation Engine 2, the game is still limited to 30 frames per second on consoles, even the Xbox Series X. While Starfield has received the most technical polish from Bethesda Game Studios in over a decade, it still displays flaws on the most powerful console the Creation Engine has ever run on. In contrast, Obsidian's Avowed appears to be a game without these technical issues, with better combat, animations, and art design. With Avowed as a heavily modified Skyrim and The Elder Scrolls 6 set to release within a few years of each other, comparisons between the two are inevitable, and with better hardware, software, talent, and funding than ever before, The Elder Scrolls 6 cannot afford to fall short.
The Elder Scrolls 6 Must Stand Out, And Apart, From Avowed
Skyrim is a game that has achieved legendary status within the gaming industry, despite being plagued with issues upon its initial release. It has continued to sell well even on new consoles, demonstrating its enduring appeal to mainstream gamers. With such a high bar set by its predecessor, The Elder Scrolls 6 is expected to meet equally high expectations. However, if it is released within two or three years of a successful Avowed launch, it may struggle to stand out from its own publisher's projects. While it is possible that The Elder Scrolls 6 may be delayed in order to avoid this, it is more likely that it will be released far enough apart from Avowed to avoid any such issues. Nonetheless, it would be wise for Bethesda to keep an eye on Obsidian's progress with the formula that they once championed, and to learn from it in order to make The Elder Scrolls 6 the best it can be.
Avowed will release in 2024 for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
