In TA 2509, Eorl was approached by Cirion, the Steward of Gondor, who desperately needed help defending against an invasion by Sauron's men. Despite the odds, Eorl agreed and led 7000 Éothéod cavalrymen to rescue Gondor. In appreciation, Cirion granted Eorl the land of Calenardhon, thus making him the first King of Rohan.

Helm Hammerhand was born more than 180 years later, during the reign of his great-grandfather, King Goldwine. Goldwine's peaceful rule came to an end with his death when Helm was eight years old. However, the next monarch, King Déor, presided over a period of war. When Cirion entrusted Calenardhon to Eorl, it angered the Dunlendings who inhabited the land. The Dunlendings, a fierce and untamed culture, were pushed into the mountains by the Rohirrim. When Helm was 19, the Dunlendings seized the abandoned fortress of Isengard, using it as a base to launch attacks on Rohan for generations. Under the reign of Helm's father, King Gram, these isolated raids escalated into full-scale warfare. At the age of 50, in the midst of active war with the Dunlendings, Helm Hammerhand ascended to the throne as the ninth King of Rohan.

What was Helm Hammerhand’s legacy?

King Helm, a commanding and formidable figure, was known for his fierce martial prowess and his preference for the heat of battle over the confines of his throne room. In the year TA 2754, he faced a confrontational landowner named Freca, who proclaimed himself as a descendant of Rohan's fifth King. However, many doubted this claim, as Freca bore a striking resemblance to the Dunlendings. To assert his demand that Helm arrange a marriage between his daughter and Freca's son Wulf, Freca led a small army to the castle. Helm, however, chose to mock Freca, prompting the landowner to utter a death threat against the King. Without hesitation, Helm delivered a fatal blow to Freca with a single punch. Wulf, enraged by his father's demise, rallied a force composed of Dunlendings and other warriors, initiating a siege upon Rohan. Initially, Wulf's army achieved some success, compelling Helm to retreat. Nevertheless, Helm became renowned for his unwavering defense against the prolonged siege at a fortress known as the Hornburg. Defying his adversaries with only his bare hands, he killed countless men, firmly convinced that by eschewing weapons, he would remain invulnerable. Ultimately, Helm and his sons perished in the war, their fate sealed in part by the unrelenting blizzards of the Long Winter.

Following the deaths of Helm and his sons, the original line of succession came to an end. Fréaláf Hildeson, Helm's nephew, led the counterattack against the Dunlendings and personally vanquished Wulf. As a result, Fréaláf ascended the throne, establishing the second line of succession. The passing of Hammerhand gave rise to a legend that transcended his lifetime. Helm did not meet his demise in combat; instead, he succumbed to the bitter cold of a blizzard. His lifeless body was discovered frozen solid, standing tall with eyes wide open. Consequently, the Rohirrim believed that Helm's spirit still roamed Rohan, steeped in unrelenting anger. Due to this famous incident, the fortified gorge that Helm valiantly defended against Wulf became renowned as Helm's Deep. This location would later serve as the backdrop for the initial major battle of the War of the Ring.
