Over the years, Scorpion and Sub-Zero, the famous figures of Mortal Kombat, have transformed from mere palette swaps to distinct characters. In the latest narrative of Mortal Kombat 1, Scorpion's real identity emerges as Kuai Liang, and an intriguing twist unfolds as he and Sub-Zero are portrayed as brothers, completely altering their previous adversarial relationship.

Leading up to the highly anticipated release of Mortal Kombat 1, details about the game have been steadily revealed. One particularly significant aspect that has been discussed within the series' community is the introduction of a rebooted universe, created by Liu Kang after the events of Mortal Kombat 11's Aftermath DLC. In this new world, the origin stories of all the kombatants have been revamped. Among them, the iconic ninjas, Scorpion and Sub-Zero, have undergone some of the most significant changes to their lore, reflecting the culmination of their long-standing rivalry throughout the franchise.

Scorpion and Sub-Zero, being the unmistakable faces of the Mortal Kombat series, have been closely associated with the brand since the days of the arcade. Originally differentiated only by their abilities while sharing the same ninja design, both characters have evolved over the years to become more unique and distinct. Throughout the classic era and modern entries, Scorpion has also become known as Hanzo Hasashi, while Sub-Zero's true identity is Kuai Liang. These alternate names are connected to the opposing Shirai Ryu and Lin Kuei clans that the ninjas belong to. However, Mortal Kombat 1 appears to have completely turned this premise on its head.

Scorpion and Sub-Zero's Rivalry Has Defined Mortal Kombat

Scorpion, a vengeful wraith, killed the original Sub-Zero during the first Mortal Kombat. Subsequently, the younger brother of the Lin Kuei's Sub-Zero took on the mantle. The original Sub-Zero, Bi-Han, later became Noob Saibot, while the younger Kuai Liang has since claimed the Sub-Zero title in all subsequent appearances. Scorpion remained an undead spirit until Mortal Kombat 10 in 2015, which marked the beginning of experimentation with the character.

Hanzo Hasashi, revived in human form, emerged as a human version of Scorpion, reflecting his ninja persona before his death at the hands of the original Sub-Zero. During the timeskip of Mortal Kombat 10, Hanzo Hasashi rebuilt the Shirai Ryu clan and went on to confront his past self in Mortal Kombat 11. As Hanzo Hasashi has revealed another side of Scorpion, his rivalry with Sub-Zero has also diminished. The two ninjas have resolved their conflict, ever since Kuai Liang proved that it was Quan Chi who exterminated the Shirai Ryu clan. However, Mortal Kombat 1 has taken their unity to a new level.

Kuai Liang's Inversion in Mortal Kombat 1

Hanzo Hasashi appears to have been completely removed from the situation in Liu Kang's new timeline, with Scorpion's true identity now revealed as Kuai Liang. Bi-Han has returned as Sub-Zero once again, and the two ninja rivals are now brothers. The decision to transform the previous Sub-Zero into Scorpion has been a topic of controversy among fans, but it seems to be an integral part of the narrative in Mortal Kombat 1.

Another member of the Lin Kuei, Smoke, has shown a strong bond with the brothers. Scorpion confirms that Smoke is considered a brother to them, despite not sharing their blood. This contrasts with Noob Saibot's statement to Sub-Zero, suggesting a different perspective. While the origins of the ninjas are presented in a more peaceful manner this time, with the new Bi-Han striving for power as the Grandmaster of the clan, it remains uncertain whether the Lin Kuei will remain united or face internal conflict. Regardless of their fate in Mortal Kombat 1, Scorpion and Sub-Zero's relationship has come a long way from their bitter rivalry that has always defined them as fighters.
