Summary

Lord Cregan Stark will have a small but important role in House of the Dragon season 2.

However, Cregan's best role won't be until House of the Dragon season 4, when he arrives in King's Landing.

Cregan Stark's role in season 4 will be brutal, as he plays a pivotal role in restoring peace to the realm. The introduction of Lord Cregan Stark is highly anticipated in House of the Dragon season 2. However, his most significant moments are expected to occur in season 4. While the story of House Stark overshadowed Game of Thrones, it only plays a minor role in House of the Dragon. In season 1, the great house was scarcely seen, with Lord Rickon Stark pledging loyalty to Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen as the chosen heir of King Viserys I.

In House of the Dragon season 2, there will be an increase in House Stark involvement compared to season 1. Rhaenyra sends her eldest son, Jacaerys Velaryon, to the Vale where he will meet Lady Jeyne Arryn, and eventually he will also visit Winterfell in the North to meet Lord Cregan Stark. This interaction with Lord Cregan Stark will be especially significant, but it will mainly occur later in the prequel series.

Cregan Stark Will Only Have A Small Role In House Of The Dragon Season 2

The Epic House of the Dragon Storyline Unveiled: Season 4 Promises Unforgettable Stark Moments

In House of the Dragon season 1, Cregan Stark faced significant teasing, but his role in season 2 will be relatively small yet important. However, those expecting him to be a main character will be disappointed. The events that unfold between Jacaerys and Cregan in Winterfell are a subject of debate among the various historical accounts mentioned in Fire & Blood. One account suggests that Jace and Cregan developed a strong friendship and spent time together hunting and drinking. Another account claims that Jacaerys attempted to convert Cregan to the Faith of the Seven. The most scandalous version, recounted by court jester Mushroom, alleges that Jace had a relationship with Cregan's half-sister and that Lord Stark forced them to marry.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the true events, it is indisputable that Cregan agreed to support Rhaenyra and the blacks. In exchange, Jacaerys' firstborn daughter, if he were to have one, would be wedded to Cregan's son. This agreement, known as the Pact of Ice and Fire, formed a significant alliance between the Starks and the Targaryens. However, the pact was never fully realized as Jacaerys tragically died before the conclusion of the Dance of the Dragons.

That is the majority of Cregan's contribution in House of the Dragon season 2. Although significant, it will probably only comprise a few scenes spread across a couple of episodes. This is because it is not the main focus of the storyline, and there are more significant events to address, especially considering the series has only eight episodes instead of the usual ten.

Cregan Stark’s Role In House Of The Dragon Season 4 Will Be Great (& Brutal)

The Epic House of the Dragon Storyline Unveiled: Season 4 Promises Unforgettable Stark Moments

In terms of the number of seasons for House of the Dragon, it is most likely to have four. In this scenario, Cregan will play a significant role in the Dance of the Dragons towards the end of the civil war. While he does send a considerable Northern army to fight alongside the blacks, Cregan himself only marches south much later. It is worth noting that by the time they arrive in King's Landing, where Cregan's host of thousands (the exact number is a subject of debate, ranging from 8,000 to as many as 20,000) is stationed, the majority of the fighting has already taken place. Furthermore, King Aegon II Targaryen has already been slain, and Rhaenyra herself is deceased at this point.

Cregan takes charge of cleaning up the aftermath of the Targaryens' mess. He arrests and condemns several remaining members of the greens, and assumes control of Westeros from the foot of the Iron Throne for almost a week. Cregan embodies the true essence of a Stark - dutiful, honorable, but also unusually fierce and formidable, surpassing any character seen on Game of Thrones. It will be captivating to witness. With his own hands, he personally executes two men, including Larys Strong, using the legendary sword Ice. This execution will undoubtedly be one of the most gratifying moments of the show.

During this period, Cregan meets Alysanne Blackwood, known as Black Aly. She is a skilled archer and hunter, and can be seen as the closest equivalent to Arya Stark in House of the Dragon. This dynamic duo's story in season 4 promises to be exceptional. This is when the Starks truly rise to prominence and become influential in the narrative, showcasing a pivotal part of their history and introducing unforgettable characters. Furthermore, it signifies that the Starks will ultimately emerge as one of the victorious factions in the Dance of the Dragons, returning to their home on their own terms after contributing to the restoration of peace and order in the realm.
