George RR Martin praises House of the Dragon, the newest addition to the Game of Thrones franchise, for surpassing its predecessor in remarkable ways

Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has recently lauded a specific aspect of HBO's House of the Dragon. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series, which introduced the captivating realm of Westeros in the immensely popular Game of Thrones and its recent prequel House of the Dragon, currently encompasses five books, with more to follow. However, Martin openly expressed that House of the Dragon surpasses Game of Thrones in at least one aspect.

According to Deadline, Martin's appreciation for the recent prequel can be summed up in one aspect that Martin believes could have been executed better in the original series: the dragons. During an FYC House of the Dragon screening, Martin openly admitted that he was not particularly impressed with the dragons in Game of Thrones, stating, "They were all the same." However, with an array of new dragons as companions to the Targaryen family, around whom the prequel revolves, the House of the Dragon creators were able to significantly improve their use of creature effects this time around. "These dragons had personality," Martin elaborated. "They truly came to life. I found great satisfaction in witnessing that."

House of the Dragon has already introduced fans to some of the most important dragons in the series. One standout is the immense and terrifying Vhagar, who plays a pivotal role in the season 1 finale. According to Martin, the individual characteristics of each dragon are more carefully crafted in House of the Dragon compared to Game of Thrones. In the original series, the dragons appeared less frequently and had less defined personalities. Martin expresses his excitement, stating, "The minute I saw Caraxes I knew who the hell he was. And Syrax, coming in the beginning."

In House of the Dragon season 2, audiences can expect an even greater presence of dragons. These mythical creatures are portrayed as characters with their own motives, sometimes conflicting with their human riders. In Game of Thrones, Daenerys' three dragons started off as adorable and cat-like creatures that hatched from eggs. However, they eventually became integral to the plot. Yet, aside from minor variations in appearance, the three dragons were largely indistinguishable. With the new series placing a significant emphasis on dragons, both Martin and fans hope for the creation of memorable and awe-inspiring creatures.
