The Crown is finally coming back for season 6 — but all of the new episodes won’t be dropping at once.

Netflix revealed on Monday, October 9th, that the drama will make a comeback on Thursday, November 16th, consisting of four episodes. Following that, the final six episodes of the sixth season will air on Thursday, December 14th.

Accompanying the release date announcement was a captivating teaser featuring the late Queen Elizabeth II throughout different periods, portrayed by the three talented actresses who have played her on the show: Claire Foy, Olivia Colman, and Imelda Staunton.

“The crown is a symbol of permanence,” Foy, 39, says in a voiceover. “It’s something you are, not what you do.”

Colman, aged 49, proceeds to add her own statement, asserting that a part of our authentic selves is perpetually compromised. Each of us has made sacrifices, which are not a matter of choice but rather a duty.

The scene concludes as Staunton, aged 67, assumes the role of Elizabeth during her later years. She poses the question, "However, what about the life and woman I set aside?"

Season 6 of The Crown will continue the storyline in 1997 after the divorce of Princess Diana and King Charles III, and during Tony Blair's tenure as prime minister. The upcoming episodes are expected to span the early 2000s, capturing significant events such as Prince William and Princess Kate's initial encounter at the University of St Andrews.

In addition, the new season will respectfully portray Princess Diana's tragic death at the age of 36 in a car accident in Paris in August 1997. The producers have assured viewers that this sensitive event will be handled with utmost care.

“There was an extremely meticulous and extensive discussion about the approach – and I hope that the audience will ultimately evaluate it, but I believe it has been meticulously and thoughtfully reimagined,” stated executive producer Suzanne Mackie in August at the Edinburgh TV Festival. “We are considerate individuals and we possess a high level of sensitivity.”

Mackie additionally commended Elizabeth Debicki’s portrayal of Diana in the concluding episodes. At 33 years old, Debicki assumed the role after Emma Corrin's portrayal in season 4.

Mackie praised Debicki for her thoughtfulness, consideration, and love for Diana. He expressed immense respect from everyone involved and hoped that it would be visible in the final product. Debicki herself acknowledged earlier this year that portraying Diana was the most intricate acting challenge she has ever faced.

"The intensity of each layer is remarkable," she shared with Deadline in June. "This exceptional series has successfully captivated audiences for five seasons. As you step into the shoes of such iconic and adored woman, surrounded by an extraordinary cast, you can't help but feel overwhelmed. The weight of this challenge, combined with the demanding two-year shooting schedule, truly pushes you to let go and grow as an actor."
