With the highly anticipated release of Mortal Kombat 1 approaching, fans are eager to learn about the roster and what surprises it may hold. Although classic characters have been confirmed, there is speculation that the game will continue to bring back unexpected fighters. Mortal Kombat has introduced over 60 playable characters in its history, but some have left a lasting impression on fans, whether it be for better or worse. One such character is Kurtis Stryker, a realistic New York City riot cop introduced in 1995's Mortal Kombat 3. While some fans found his design too plain and controversial, others appreciated the contrast he provided to the magical ninja warriors and special forces.
Stryker has Always had an Ironic Appeal
Stryker's inclusion in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon's vast character roster didn't bring much to his character, a trend that continued in the franchise's 2011 reboot. Despite being unique from his peers due to his straight edge moral code, Stryker's lack of complexity has resulted in forgettable narratives throughout the years. Nonetheless, Stryker has maintained a fanbase who appreciate his ironic nature and would welcome his return. However, given the current social and political climate, his return would need to be handled carefully to avoid controversy. While Mortal Kombat is not meant to be taken seriously, the series' association with violence could result in a distasteful portrayal of a police officer's actions in the game. As such, rumors of DC's Peacemaker being a guest character in Mortal Kombat 11 could serve as a compromise to keep Stryker's style in the series while moving away from the city cop archetype.
Stryker in Mortal Kombat 1 Would Need to Mind the Cultural Climate
For Stryker to make a comeback in the next Mortal Kombat game, NetherRealm Studios would need to revamp his character completely. His previous portrayal as a hero cop with violent tendencies and references to police brutality would not be acceptable in today's climate. However, with the recent reboot setting, there is potential for a new and improved version of Stryker to emerge. While he may be a controversial character, his absence from the game for over a decade would undoubtedly make his return a shock to fans. The Kameo Fighters mechanic also offers a possibility for him to make a cameo appearance, even if he doesn't become a main fighter. It remains to be seen whether NetherRealm will take the risk and give Stryker a chance in the upcoming game.
