A statement from a BBC spokesperson on Sunday stated that the British broadcaster is currently investigating the allegations of sexual assault raised in the Channel 4 documentary on Russell Brand. The spokesperson mentioned that the documentary and related reports contained serious allegations that spanned several years, and that the BBC is actively looking into the matter, considering Russell Brand's past work on BBC radio programs from 2006 to 2008.
British media outlets The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4's "Dispatches" collaborated to conduct a joint investigation, which was published on Saturday. The investigation revealed that four women have come forward and accused Brand of sexually assaulting them in different incidents that occurred between 2006 and 2013. Notably, one of the women claimed that she was only 16 years old at the time of the alleged assault in London, while Brand was 31.
Prior to the publication of the report, Brand took to his verified Instagram page on Friday to preemptively deny the allegations. He posted a video addressing the accusations.
The women chose not to be identified by name in the report, according to The Times. CNN has not been able to independently verify their claims.
Russell Brand appears on stage at the West Hall of the Los Angeles Convention Center in California on January 24, 2020. He is speaking as part of the MusiCares Person of the Year event, where Aerosmith is being honored.
Russell Brand refutes 'criminal accusations' linked to his 'promiscuous history'.
Earlier, a spokesperson for the BBC mentioned that Brand had departed from the public broadcasting organization following a significant violation of editorial rules in 2008, stating, "We trust this exhibits the BBC's steadfast commitment towards addressing matters appropriately and taking necessary actions."
The BBC spokesperson stated that they have revised their approach towards talent and complaints over the years and have established clear expectations regarding workplace conduct. They emphasized their willingness to listen to individuals who raise concerns about any issue related to any current or former BBC employee. Brand has openly discussed his previous struggles with drug and sex addiction, as well as mental health problems, and has focused on promoting wellness through his digital platform in recent times.
"These allegations refer to the period when I was heavily involved in mainstream media, constantly featured in newspapers and movies. As I have extensively detailed in my books, I engaged in a lot of casual sexual relationships during that time," Brand stated in his video released on Friday. "I want to make it clear that all the relationships I had during my promiscuous phase were always consensual."
Despite the reports, the comedian carried on with his performances and, as reported by the BBC, he took the stage at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre on Saturday as part of his "Bipolarisation" tour.
