During a September grand jury hearing, Detective Clifford Mogg from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, who was assigned to the 1996 murder case of rapper Tupac Shakur, revealed a theory suggesting a possible connection between Shakur's murder and the killing of rapper Biggie Smalls. In the recently disclosed transcript from the Clark County grand jury proceeding, Mogg stated that the investigative team believed individuals associated with both murders were potentially involved.
Mogg later affirmed the accuracy of the theory that they had a connection. The specifics of the theory were not disclosed, but Mogg did clarify that Duane Davis, who was recently held accountable for Shakur's murder, was not implicated.
"When you mention a connection, are you implying that the same people committed both crimes?" inquired Chief Deputy District Attorney Marc DiGiacomo. Mogg confirmed, "That's correct."
In another grand jury session, Mogg expressed his belief that Davis spoke openly about his role in Shakur's shooting death with the intention of profiting financially. DiGiacomo questioned whether Davis had stated any reasons for conducting numerous interviews despite no one being officially charged for the murder, and queried why he would be so outspoken if he were indeed involved.
Mogg responded by stating that the primary motive behind his incessant participation in interviews could be attributed to financial benefits. Furthermore, Mogg elaborated on how the search conducted at Daviss residence in July 2023 sought to ascertain if he had received any form of payment or compensation linked to his allegations regarding Shakur's demise.
During the grand jury testimony, Mogg presented excerpts from Davis' book "Compton Street Legend" to vividly depict his involvement in a gang and to divulge the intricate details regarding the circumstances surrounding Shakur's untimely demise.
For years, Davis, currently facing a murder charge, maintained his presence at the crime scene, openly stating that he occupied the front seat of a white Cadillac when it pulled up next to Shakur's vehicle and gunfire erupted from the backseat. Shakur sustained four gunshot wounds and tragically passed away six days thereafter.
Shakur died in September 1996 in Las Vegas.Smalls, born Christopher Wallace, was also shot and killed in a drive-by shooting, in March 1997 in Los Angeles.
