On October 22, 2023, Taylor Swift was spotted enjoying a game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. The event was captured by David Eulitt/Getty Images.

The next time your family argues about whether Taylor Swift is getting too much screen time during a Kansas City Chiefs game, tell them that she doesn't want to be part of the discussion.

"I don't know how they know what suite I'm in. There's a camera, like, a half-mile away, and you don't know where it is, and you have no idea when the camera is putting you in the broadcast, so I don't know if I'm being shown 17 times or once," Swift, 33, said in her TIME Person of the Year cover story published on Wednesday, December 6. "I'm just there to support Travis [Kelce]. I have no awareness of if I'm being shown too much and pissing off a few dads, Brads, and Chads."

Swift has been seen at five of Kelce’s games since September, confirming to TIME that the two were officially a couple when she attended her first game on September 24.

"Football is actually pretty cool," she jokingly told the magazine. "I've been missing out all my life."

The NFL has fully utilized Swift and Kelce's relationship, incorporating her music into promos, making clever puns about Kelce's performance using Swift's songs (he performs better when he's at the game instead of "left to his own devices"), and featuring the 12-time Grammy winner multiple times during the broadcast. Despite some football fans expressing dissatisfaction with the coverage, the league has welcomed the increase in ratings.

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift's relationship is not only enjoyable in itself, but it has also brought together more fans of Taylor and the NFL, according to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. During a CBS interview last month, Goodell commented, "[Swift is] an unbelievable artist, obviously, Travis is an unbelievable player and I think it’s great for the league to have that kind of attention — so we welcome it."

Travis’ brother, Jason Kelce, called the NFL’s actions excessive on their podcast “New Heights,” while league spokesman Brian McCarthy assured the Associated Press that the romance was not arranged by the NFL. He added in October, “You’ve got a lot of people that care about Taylor and for good reason.” Travis, 34, has also become accustomed to the spotlight.

“We’re accustomed to the paparazzi constantly snapping photos from all angles, it’s just part of the territory. There are many people who genuinely care about Taylor, and rightfully so," he remarked during a press conference in October. "The key is to keep embracing life, gaining wisdom, and savoring the moments. Ultimately, I have always excelled at compartmentalizing and staying focused. I will continue to rely on that skill."

“I’ve never dated anyone with that kind of aura before… I’ve never experienced that,” he mentioned in his recent profile for WSJ. Magazine. “But I’m not avoiding it. The intense scrutiny she faces, the constant paparazzi presence at her home, the restaurants she visits, and every time she steps off a flight, and yet she still lives her life and enjoys it. Her behavior sets the example, and I better not be the one acting unusual.”

He also said, “Being around her and seeing how intelligent Taylor is has been incredibly impressive. I’m learning something new every day.”
