To celebrate the upcoming release of Speak Now (Taylor's Version), Taylor Swift pleasantly surprised her Minnesota fans, known as Swifties, by performing an acoustic rendition of "Dear John" at The Eras Tour. Not only did she give a heartfelt performance, but she also made a sincere request.
During her concert in Minneapolis on Saturday, June 24, the 33-year-old singer, referred to as the "Mastermind" songstress, expressed her desire for kindness and gentleness to be spread through online activities leading up to the album release. This request was prompted by Taylor's admiration for her fans' growing friendships, which have blossomed as a result of their shared love for her music.
Swift, who is preparing to release her re-recorded version of her album "Speak Now" next month, further elaborated on her decision to revisit her old records.
The singer stated, "I am releasing this now because I want to have ownership of my music, and I believe that any artist who desires to own their music should be able to do so. This is why I am putting out this album." She added, "At 33 years old, I do not concern myself with anything that happened to me when I was 19, with the exception of the songs I wrote. Therefore, I am not releasing this album to provoke you to defend me on the Internet against someone you may think I wrote the song about millions of years ago."

Following her inspiring speech, Swift proceeded to perform a revamped rendition of her popular track "Dear John." Initially released in 2010, the song was widely speculated to be influenced by her past relationship with the now-ex John Mayer.
The talented actress from "Valentine's Day" and Mayer, aged 45, were initially linked in 2009 after their collaboration on his hit song "Half of My Heart." Swift, then 19, and Mayer, 32, sparked curiosity among their observant fans, who believed that the lyrics of "Dear John" alluded to their significant age difference.
In a heartfelt song, Taylor Swift expresses her regret and disappointment over a relationship that turned out to be manipulative and damaging. Although she doesn't disclose the identity in public, it was rumored to be John Mayer. In 2012, Mayer admitted feeling embarrassed by the lyrics, but he later retracted his initial criticism.
During a February 2021 appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Mayer expressed his admiration for a particular song and jokingly hoped that it was about him. He emphasized that appreciating a song in this way is not a shameful admission and shared that he is a fan of various artists' music, with a willingness to explore and listen to their work. In contrast, Swift is widely recognized for crafting songs inspired by her past relationships, including those with Joe Alwyn and Jake Gyllenhaal. Following the release of Red (Taylor's Version) in November 2021, Gyllenhaal faced public backlash from Swift's devoted fans who interpreted the lyrics in her extended version of "All Too Well" as alluding to their brief romantic involvement.
"It is not related to me personally. The focus is on her connection with her fans," expressed the renowned actor from "Brokeback Mountain" in an interview with Esquire in February 2022, finally breaking his silence on the supposed musical influence. "It represents her individual expression. Artists draw from personal experiences for inspiration, and I hold no ill will towards anyone for that."
Gyllenhaal further delved into the undeserved attention he received on social media once the new album was released. "At a certain point, I believe it's crucial for us, as supporters, to ensure that we maintain civility and prevent cyberbullying in the name of others," he explained to the media outlet. "This raises a deeper philosophical question. Not necessarily about any particular person, but a conversation that allows us to reflect on how we can - or even should - take accountability for what we contribute to the world, our impact on the world. How can we stimulate a meaningful dialogue? We witness this in politics. There is anger and polarization, and it becomes dangerously life-threatening."
Swift's highly anticipated album, Speak Now (Taylor's Version), including the emotional track "Dear John," is set to release this Friday, July 7th. Ahead of the release, the singer-songwriter from Pennsylvania gave fans a sneak peek of the song "Mine" by sharing a snippet through her social media platforms on Saturday.
