Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department has been stirring up curiosity among fans with questions about her past relationship with Joe Alwyn. And now, there's a new theory circulating that a recent song could be linked to an old favorite.

One of the songs from The Tortured Poets Department is titled "Fresh Out the Slammer." Some observant Swifties believe that this song might be a response or continuation of her love songs from the Reputation era about Alwyn, who is 33 years old.

One fan expressed their astonishment on Friday, April 12, via X, saying that the transition from "he can be my jailor" to "fresh out the slammer" in Taylor Swift's 2017 album Reputation was unbelievable.

The song "Ready for It?" includes the lyrics, "And

Comparing her romance to Elizabeth Taylor’s famed relationship with Richard Burton, the lines suggest that she is content with being locked away as long as it is with her then-partner. Although the 34-year-old Swift does not explicitly mention her inspiration in her lyrics, it is widely believed that her album Reputation was influenced by her relationship with Alwyn.

Between 2016 and early 2023, Swift and the Conversations With Friends actor were in a relationship. Throughout this time, she released albums such as Reputation, Lover, Folklore, Evermore, Midnights, and a few rereleases. Despite their public personas, the couple chose to keep their relationship private and were rarely seen together in public.

Swift, in her 2023 Person of the Year profile with TIME, expressed the importance of having adventures in life. She mentioned that locking herself away for many years is something she regrets, as she can never regain that lost time. She also shared that she has become more trusting compared to six years ago.

Following the release of TTPD, Swifties worldwide have been speculating about the meaning behind many of the songs, such as "Fresh Out the Slammer," which is believed to touch on the pop star's experiences with heartbreak.

Another social media user on X speculated, "If the first word is hereby, could that mean 'fresh out of the slammer' is like a storyline of being prosecuted to go to jail and it ends with her getting out?" This was in reference to Swift's breakup with Alwyn in April 2023, followed by her new relationship with Travis Kelce a few months later.

During that April, some fans used the song title to caption photos of Swift out-and-about in New York City, contrasting her previous tendency to stay at home with Alwyn and her pet cats.

One fan suggested, "What if it wasn't her just released from prison, but him instead? What if he felt trapped by her fame, and when they broke up, he actually felt relieved instead of upset?"

After Swift and Alwyn ended their relationship, a source told Us that the private actor never enjoyed being in the spotlight that came with Swift's huge level of fame. However, he didn't hold her responsible for being the center of attention. (Swift's song "Peace" from 2020 reflects her concerns about this same issue.)

Taylor Swift's songs often touch on themes of jail and escape. In addition to "Fresh Out the Slammer" and "Ready for It?", her track "Getaway Car" describes a great escape and feeling the light of freedom.

Another example is "Afterglow" from her album Lover released in 2019. In this song, Swift mentions putting someone in jail for something they didn't do. Furthermore, in her music video for "I Can See You" in 2023, Swift is seen trying to escape from a prison cell in a locked vault.

Are you a fan of Taylor Swift's exes? Have you ever wondered which one is your favorite?

The concept of the "I Can See You" video is all about Swift taking control of her music. After Big Machine Records sold her masters to third parties without her consent, she decided to re-release her past albums. This video is more about empowerment than a breakup. It's possible that the theme continues in "Fresh Out the Slammer."

It cannot be completely explained what “Fresh Out the Slammer” is about until The Tortured Poet Department comes out on Friday, April 19.

Editor's P/S:

Taylor Swift's "The Tortured Poets Department" has sparked speculation among fans, particularly about the song "Fresh Out the Slammer." Many believe it could be linked to her previous relationship with Joe Alwyn, as the lyrics seem to mirror Swift's sentiments expressed in her past album, "Reputation." The song's title suggests a sense of release, echoing Swift's recent comments about regretting isolating herself in the past.

The theory that "Fresh Out the Slammer" is related to Alwyn stems from the couple's highly private relationship. Alwyn reportedly felt uncomfortable with the attention that came with dating Swift, leading to their eventual breakup in 2023. The song's lyrics, such as "Fresh out the slammer" and "He can be my jailor," seem to hint at this dynamic, with Swift portraying herself as being imprisoned by the relationship and now feeling liberated. While Swift has not explicitly confirmed the connection, the timing and lyrical content of "Fresh Out the Slammer" strongly suggest that it may be a reflection of her past experience with Alwyn.
