Is there a Stranger Things Season 5 release window?
The release window for Stranger Things Season 5 has not yet been confirmed. David Harbour hinted in an interview with Collider that filming for Season 5 is expected to begin in mid-2023.
"We are gearing up for season five with a few more months of training ahead. Filming is set to begin in June and this will mark the last season. Season four required a lot of training, especially for Hopper's role in the Russian prison. Unfortunately, these plans were put on hold due to the Writer's Guild strike, as confirmed by the Duffers Brothers on Twitter."
"Hello everyone. Despite the start of filming, we are still committed to writing. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing strike, production cannot commence. We are optimistic that a fair resolution will be reached soon so that we can all return to work. Until then, take care and stay tuned for updates.
"
With the WGA strikes now over and ongoing talks between SAG-AFTRA to find resolutions, it seems that Stranger Things Season 5 may resume production soon. Producer Shawn Levy has expressed hopes to start filming as soon as possible, with the main obstacle being the resolution of the actor's strike. The Duffers have been diligently working on the show since the writer's strike ended.
We have a lot on our plate with our upcoming London premiere of our play, Stranger Things. It's incredible. It's absolutely amazing."
According to behind-the-scenes tweets for Season 5, all signs indicate that the final season will consist of eight episodes. However, it is still unknown how long each episode will be. Season 5 may follow the pattern of the previous season and have a movie-length finale episode, or even better, have multiple episodes with a total runtime of two hours.
But it looks like the Stranger Things team is gearing up to offer fans more concrete hints about what the final season will entail with their new stage play. As per Discussing Film, the stage production serves as a prequel set in 1959, featuring Hopper’s car failing to start, Bob Newby’s sister not taking his radio show seriously, Joyce aspiring to graduate, and the arrival of Henry Creel.
Are there Stranger Things Season 5 cast details?
So far, it seems like most of the main cast will be returning for Season 5. This includes:
Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven
Finn Wolfhard as Mike
Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas
Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin
Noah Schnapp as Will
Natalia Dyer as Nancy
Joe Keery as Steve
Charlie Heaton as Jonathan
Maya Hawke as Robin
Winona Ryder as Joyce
David Harbour will reprise his role as Hopper in Season 5. It is probable that Sadie Sink will return as Max, despite her character being left in a coma at the end of Season 4. However, the extent of her appearance in Season 5 remains uncertain. Additionally, it appears that Joe Quinn's fan-favorite character Eddie Munson will not be returning for the upcoming season, as his character will remain deceased.
Season 5 is rumored to feature digital de-aging of the current cast to make them appear younger. Additionally, the season will introduce Linda Hamilton, known for her role as Sarah Conner in the Terminator franchise, in an undisclosed role.
The Stranger Things kids are getting ready for the Season 4 finale on Netflix. As this is the final season, it is expected that not every character will make it. According to Maya Hawke in Rolling Stone, "Well, it's the last season, so people are probably going to die. I would love to die and get my hero's moment. I'd love to die with honor, as any actor would."
The Duffer Brothers' love for their actors is evident in the way they write for them. They genuinely care about their characters and don't want to see them come to harm. This quality is something I truly admire and wouldn't want to change.
After recently coming out as gay and confirming his character's sexuality, Noah Schnapp expressed excitement about fully embracing his identity in his acting for Season 5.
During the interview, Ross Duffer revealed that Will will have a significant presence in Season 5, with his emotional journey being crucial to the series. Duffer added that Will's character development will not only focus on his sexuality but also on his growth into a young man as he breaks free from his introverted and protected persona.
Furthermore, Millie Bobby Brown has expressed her readiness for her time on Stranger Things to conclude.
“When you’re prepared, you're like, 'Okay, let's tackle this final senior year. Let's move on,'" shared Brown with Variety. "Stranger Things requires a significant amount of filming time and is hindering me from pursuing stories that truly ignite my passion. So I'm prepared to express, 'Thank you, and farewell.'"

Stranger Things Season 5 plot: What will it be about?
Speaking with Variety on their Showrunners Sitdown segment, the Duffer Brothers explained that “the only thing we don’t delve into in Volume 2 is Upside Down lore.”
The upcoming season will further explore the demonic underworld, with Season 5 focusing on the origin of the Upside Down and its creatures such as the Mind Flayer and Vecna. The Duffers have confirmed that they know the ending of the show.
"The possibility of change is there, but it's doubtful, considering it's one of those endings that just feels right and inevitable. When you think about it, it's like, 'Yes, that's exactly how it has to be.'"
David Harbour also revealed that he knows how the series will end, and he believes it will be incredibly emotional.
Additionally, it seems that Season 5 is on track to be the most emotionally impactful season yet. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the creators of Stranger Things shared that Netflix executives were moved to tears after reading the first script for the upcoming season.
"We managed to make our executives cry, which I think is a good indication of the emotional depth. The only other times I've seen them cry were during budget meetings," Matt quipped.
They also hinted on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, saying: “Characters are already going to be in action, they’re already going to have a goal and a drive, and I think that’s going to carve out at least a couple hours and make this season feel really different.”
In terms of the cast, Finn Wolfhard told Collider that he has read scripts for the first 3 episodes of the final season, but he remains uncertain about the ending: “Well, I think it answers an insane amount of questions about the lore of Stranger Things, the world-building. I think a lot of people will be happy with getting back– It’s the last season, so we kind of want to get back to the roots of why the show was so special in the first place, and why the dynamics are so special in the first place, and sort of getting back to that.
"It's going to be incredibly thrilling. I'm eager, of course, to return and film it. I think it's going to be quite poignant, but I'm also just enthusiastic, as a fan, to delve into it, and I'm looking forward to seeing where everyone— I don't even know how it ends yet, honestly. I've only read the first three, so we'll see. But yes, I'm excited to see where all the characters' journeys go."
Stranger Things Season 5: What happened in Season 4?
Throughout Season 4, the Hawkins kids have been working tirelessly to uncover the mystery of Vecna, a supernatural killer who was once Dr. Martin Brenner's 001 experiment. After Eleven banished him to the Upside Down, Vecna transformed into a formidable foe due to the harsh conditions of the otherworldly realm.
Vecna has displayed his brutal powers, leading to the horrific death of Chrissy in Episode 1 and targeting Max in Episode 4, who narrowly escaped using Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill. However, she wasn't so lucky the second time and is now in a coma, expected to remain there until Season 5.
Joyce Byers and Murray Bauman managed to rescue Hopper from a Russian prison, despite his epic battle with a Demogorgon. Meanwhile, the California crew, including Mike, Will, Jonathan, and newcomer Argyle, returned to Hawkins, only to find that the town is in a precarious situation.
Vecna's plan to sacrifice four kids succeeded, resulting in the opening of a massive gate in Hawkins, allowing the Upside Down to merge with the real world. As the season comes to a close, our heroes watch in horror as black smoke pours out of the gate, foreshadowing the challenges they will face in Season 5.
Is Eleven's newly regained powers from working with the late Doctor Brenner enough to prepare her for the greatest threat Hawkins has ever faced? Stay tuned for more updates on Stranger Things Season 5.
