Fans of Overwatch 2 may have recently been disappointed by the lack of new content and the mixed reception to changes in characters Symmetra and Torbjorn. However, the future of the hero shooter still holds exciting prospects. Season 5 is set to bring back Summer Games, featuring both the classic Lucio Ball and the new Winston Volleyball mode. Following that, Overwatch 2’s version of Prop Hunt, called Magic and Mischief, will be introduced. Season 6 will bring even more excitement, particularly with the addition of co-op missions in the Invasion content, which will advance the game's story for the first time in years. Alongside this new content, PvP fans can look forward to the Flashpoint mode and a hero progression system. In the midseason update, Hero Challenge Missions will also be introduced. However, for those interested in the game's lore, the most promising feature is the codex, despite it possibly not matching up to Final Fantasy 16's lore system.
Final Fantasy 16 Has Taken Lore Systems to New Heights
The latest installment in the Final Fantasy series offers a delightful experience, from its warm-hearted protagonist Clive to the breathtaking battles against the Eikon creatures, and the thrilling action combat mechanics. What truly sets Square Enix's latest release apart is the immense effort put into immersing players in the world of Valisthea. Through its three standout features, the lore system establishes a new benchmark for video games, leaving many hopeful that it will shape the industry moving forward.
One particularly notable element of the lore system in Final Fantasy 16 is its Active Lore feature. This innovative addition allows players to pause their gameplay or cutscenes to peruse a selection of lore entries regarding significant areas or characters. Given the immense depth of the game's world and the involvement of numerous important figures in the overarching storyline, having curated lore entries at hand aids players in staying informed without becoming overwhelmed. However, this is not the system's sole contributing factor to its unique appeal.
Overwatch 2’s Lore Codex Can Be More Than Just Some Basic Descriptions
Final Fantasy 16 also introduces a Main Cast character tree, which provides players with a comprehensive overview of the key characters and their relationships within the story. This visual aid enables gamers to better understand the intricate political dynamics at play. Additionally, the Situation Map serves as the perfect complement, showcasing Clive's journey and presenting a detailed breakdown of the ongoing conflicts between the major nations in the game. Given how the lore systems of popular RPGs like The Elder Scrolls and the immersive world of Call of Duty Zombies can benefit from the intricate lore of FF16, it is challenging to envision a scenario where Overwatch 2's codex does not pale in comparison.Having more in-game lore in Overwatch 2 is definitely a positive aspect. However, since the game is set to be released in 2023, it is expected that players will have higher expectations for a comprehensive lore system. Taking inspiration from Final Fantasy 16's lore system, it would be beneficial to incorporate elements like the Situation Map, where the extent of the Omnic uprising is displayed, and the character tree, which highlights the established relationships between the heroes in Overwatch 2. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that the codex in Overwatch 2 will include these features, and the same can be said for the lack of Active Lore. Nonetheless, having additional content to read between PvE objectives would be a desirable addition.
The advantage of Overwatch 2's codex lies in its integration into a live service game. This allows Blizzard to continually expand upon it by introducing new missions and incorporating features similar to those found in the latest PlayStation exclusive, or even unveiling entirely original ideas. Over time, the codex has the potential to become as captivating as the extensive lore library found in Final Fantasy 16, despite its relatively simple beginnings. Fans can only wait and speculate on the true depth of Overwatch 2's codex, given that the standards have been set exceptionally high by Final Fantasy 16. Overwatch 2 is currently available on various platforms, including PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
