NBC Sports Boston anchor Trenni Casey quickly criticized Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker for his controversial graduation speech. Butker, 28, faced backlash for making misogynistic comments during his speech at Benedictine College in Kansas on May 11. He stated that women are fed "diabolical lies" about their role in society and emphasized the importance of being a homemaker. In addition, he referenced Taylor Swift, who has been in a relationship with tight end Travis Kelce since last summer.

Butker mentioned a saying from my teammate's girlfriend, "Familiarity breeds contempt," quoting a line from Swift's song "Bejeweled."

In her show on Thursday, May 16, Casey, 47, criticized Butker for his "dehumanizing" remarks. She expressed her disapproval of Butker referring to Swift, 34, as Kelce's "girlfriend," stating that he only sees her in that way.

Casey didn’t hold back in her criticism of Butker. She mentioned that the Chiefs kicker, who is 28 years old, spoke for 20 minutes about various negative topics like bigotry, antisemitism, misogyny, homophobia, and anti-diversity.

She also shared her own fan perspective, comparing Butker to a character from Taylor Swift’s recent album, The Tortured Poets Department, calling him "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived".

Butker criticized President Joe Biden, the COVID pandemic response, and expressed concern about the rise of what he called "degenerate cultural values and media disorder." He also made controversial remarks comparing Pride Month in the LGBTQ+ community to "deadly sins."

"I am tired of hearing people say that we have to respect everyone's opinion," the sports commentator expressed. "But we don't. We also don't have to tolerate it. You can't go around insulting and degrading people who are different from you. That's not an opinion, that's just hate."

Several celebrities have also criticized Butker for his speech, using their platforms to express their disapproval. Flavor Flav, a known fan of Swift, commented in an X post, "Sounds like some players should 'stay in their lanes' and not give commencement speeches."

Hoda Kotb warned, “Don’t speak for us,” during the Thursday episode of Today With Hoda & Jenna, adding, “I think that’s kind of the thing. Stop speaking for women out there.”
