The Nightmare Before Christmas May Be The Purest Expression Of Burton’s Style
Burton has faced criticism in recent years for moving away from the hand-crafted aesthetic of his early films and instead focusing on big-budget, CGI-filled Disney blockbusters. However, The Nightmare Before Christmas, which is often seen as the epitome of Burton's earlier style, manages to combine a dark and brooding atmosphere with a playful and charming tone. The characters in the film, much like Edward Scissorhands, carry the essence of their creator. Additionally, the stop-motion animation, skillfully directed by Henry Selick, gives the film a haunting emotional depth that complements its goth-inspired, dream-like surrealism.
Now, three decades after the success of The Nightmare Before Christmas, Burton appears to be returning to the beloved style of his earlier works. While discussing his almost-completed sequel Beetlejuice 2 in a recent interview with The Independent, Burton expressed his readiness to embrace his earlier artistic approach once again.
I really enjoyed working on Beetlejuice 2. Stripping everything down and focusing on collaborating with talented actors and puppets brought me back to the core of why I love making movies. It remains to be seen if the sequel truly captures the essence of my earliest films. However, the fact that I am once again working with "actors and puppets" is fantastic news. Meanwhile, even after thirty years, The Nightmare Before Christmas continues to captivate audiences with its stunningly designed stop-motion characters, inspiring incredible cosplay.
