Monica Bellucci has officially announced her relationship with Tim Burton, putting an end to months of speculation. According to the actress, 58, their connection is significant. "I am happy to have met this man," she revealed in an interview with Elle France on Monday, June 26. "It's rare to have an encounter like this in life."
Bellucci expressed her anticipation to work with Burton, aged 64, on Beetlejuice 2, which will serve as their inaugural collaboration. "I am familiar with him, I hold great affection for him, and now I will have the opportunity to meet the director," she conveyed. "This marks the start of another thrilling escapade."
In addition, she commended her partner's unique cinematic style, stating, "I adore this fantastical realm where the creatures possess kindness, allowing us to transform our shadows into something illuminated and forgiving. Tim Burton's films frequently explore this theme."
Bellucci and Burton initially ignited speculation about their romance when they were captured arm-in-arm in Madrid in February. Adding fuel to the rumors, they were then seen sharing a passionate kiss outside a Parisian hotel on Valentine's Day. Although certain reports from that time suggested that their relationship possibly commenced in October 2022, when Bellucci presented Burton with an honorary award at the Lumière Film Festival in Lyon, France, both individuals chose not to address the speculation until now.
Burton was previously in a long-term relationship with Helena Bonham Carter from 2001 to 2014. They have two children together, son Billy (19) and daughter Nell (15). Their split was described by Bonham Carter as a "very painful divorce" last year. In addition to their romantic involvement, they worked together on several films such as Sweeney Todd, Planet of the Apes, and Dark Shadows.
During a December 2022 interview on the "Therapy Works" podcast, Bonham Carter described their relationship as enduring. She emphasized that it does not have a definite end and even after a divorce, it can resemble a type of companionship when children are involved. Handling the dynamics of co-parenting can be highly complex. Prior to being with Bonham Carter, Burton was previously married to artist Lena Gieseke from 1987 to 1991. He then entered into a relationship with model Lisa Marie, which lasted from 1991 to 2001.
Bellucci, on her end, tied the knot with Italian photographer Claudio Carlos Basso in 1984; however, their marriage ended in divorce after a mere six months. Subsequently, she entered into matrimony with French actor Vincent Cassel in August 1999. The former pair, blessed with daughters Deva, 19, and Léonie, 13, parted ways in August 2013.
