Sofia Vergara quickly clapped back after an interviewer seemingly made fun of her accent.
Colombian actress, Sofia Vergara, 51, made an appearance on the January 9 episode of El Hormiguero where she discussed her time on the ABC sitcom Modern Family. During the conversation, host Pablo Motos asked, “How do you say ‘Modern Family’?” Vergara seemed momentarily confused before responding, “Do I say it wrong? Oh, because you speak better English than me? Ah.”
"Can you believe I've been nominated for the Emmy Awards four times in the US? And I've also been nominated four times for the Golden Globes," she boasted. Vergara portrayed Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on Modern Family for 11 seasons from 2009 to 2020. The character, who is Columbian, was known for frequently mispronouncing English words and phrases.
Prior to the conclusion of the series, Vergara faced criticism for what some viewers perceived as a stereotypical depiction of a Latina woman. When asked for her perspective by Hola! USA in 2017, the actress responded, "What's wrong with being a stereotype?" Vergara explained that Gloria's character was inspired by her mother and aunt, both of whom are Latin women from Colombia, just like herself. She expressed frustration with the complaints from Latinos about Gloria, stating "It upsets me when Latinos complain about Gloria." Additionally, Vergara expressed gratitude for the opportunity to portray Gloria, stating "I am grateful for the opportunity because the gringos have let me in with this strong accent I have."
Vergara's most recent project involves portraying the real-life Columbian drug lord Griselda Blanco in the Netflix series Griselda. Dubbed The Cocaine Godmother, Blanco was a central figure in Miami's drug trade starting in the 1970s. She was arrested in 1985 for conspiring to manufacture, import, and distribute cocaine, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. After her release in 2004, Blanco was assassinated in 2012 at the age of 69. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday, January 10, Vergara characterized Blanco as "a complex person."
