Ming Lee Simmons, 23, took to her Instagram Story on Father's Day to celebrate her mom, Kimora Lee Simmons, instead of her dad, Russell Simmons. She shared a throwback photo of herself and her 48-year-old mom walking the runway during a Baby Phat fashion show, along with the message "Happy Father's Day."
Simmons, 65, responded to his daughter's blatant criticism by posting a vague message on social media, suggesting that Kimora was to blame for his strained relationship with his daughters. The message called for a shift in perspective, urging people to question why fathers have to go through such battles to spend time with their children, instead of placing the burden solely on them.
Aoki Lee, 20, responded to Russell's post on Monday, June 19, by sharing a series of heated text messages exchanged between her and her father the day before. In addition, she posted an emotional video on her Instagram page where she explained the ongoing drama. Captioning the video, she expressed concern for her father's well-being, stating that he has been in need of help for years but refuses to acknowledge it. Aoki also revealed instances of her father's threatening and bullying behavior towards her sister and grandmother, including late-night harassment of her grandmother who is in poor health. Furthermore, she disclosed an incident where a man was sent to her sister's apartment at 2 a.m. in an attempt to intimidate her. Aoki emphasized that her father directs his anger towards anyone who does not blindly support him, emphasizing the fact that things are far from fine.
Aoki made further claims that the cofounder of Def Jam had threatened her career, stating that she would never be able to secure another fashion job if she spoke out against him. Additionally, she alleged that her father had told her that no one would believe her if she came forward about the alleged behavior. To support her claims, the model shared a video recording of a video call with Russell, in which he appeared visibly upset and emotional. However, the clip had no audio.
Kimora remained supportive of her daughters throughout the ordeal, standing by their side and sharing the video recordings and messages on her social media platforms.
"I regret having to take this action, but this individual has been endangering the lives of my children," she expressed on her Instagram Story. "I am now becoming aware of even more concerning information. We will not tolerate being bullied, threatened, or living in fear. Who cares?!"
Kimora and Russell tied the knot in 1998 and ended their marriage in 2009, after almost ten years together. In addition to her children with Russell, Kimora is also the mother of Kenzo, 13, from her previous relationship with Djimon Hounsou, and Gary, 13, and Wolfe, 8, from her marriage to Tim Leissner. In an interview with We magazine in May 2020, Kimora shared insights into her co-parenting dynamic with her ex-husband.
Unfortunately, he is not currently with me. However, I typically take the lead in parenting our children. I am the one who usually makes the decisions and everyone tends to follow my lead.
