Shocking Revelation: John Stamos' Unexpected Outburst on Full House Set

John Stamos opens up about his frustrations on being overshadowed by a child co-star on Full House, revealing his true feelings about the show Find out the untold story behind Uncle Jesse's pivotal role in this beloved sitcom

John Stamos reflects on his desire to leave Full House because he felt overshadowed by a child actor. As the beloved Uncle Jesse in the popular family sitcom from the late '80s to the early '90s, Stamos reprised his role in Netflix's spin-off sequel, Fuller House. Despite being a fan-favorite of the franchise, Stamos nearly withdrew from the project. During an appearance on Hot Ones on First We Feast to promote his upcoming memoir, If You Would Have Told Me, Stamos reminisces about his early days on Full House and specifically recounts his intention to quit after being outshined by Jodie Sweetin, who portrayed Stephanie Tanner. Read his complete statement below:

I despised Full House. However, my feelings towards the show eventually changed and I grew to love it. Initially, I was under the impression that it would be similar to Bossom Buddies with children involved. During the casting process, there was a significant amount of time spent finding background child actors. We had a table read where I, being a prominent figure from General Hospital, felt like a star. As we began reading, Jodie Sweetin, who portrayed Stephanie, delivered her lines and the audience erupted with laughter. It was so intense that I couldn't even deliver my own lines as they were overcome with laughter. Feeling embarrassed, I slunk down in my seat and rushed out to the lobby of the Century Plaza Hotel. There, I frantically searched for quarters to call my agent and command them to get me off the show.

In the aforementioned video, Stamos also discusses how Full House was initially presented to him, highlighting the unexpected aspect of working with children on the show.

How Full House Would Have Changed If John Stamos Didn't Play Uncle Jesse

This is the first time that Stamos is sharing this story, despite previously expressing disinterest in starring in Full House. While the table read was a challenging experience, he also faced difficulties working with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen during the early days of the series. At one point, Stamos even attempted to have the twins removed from their roles as Michelle. However, he changed his mind when he and the rest of the crew realized that the Olsen Twins were the perfect fit for the youngest Tanner.

Although Stamos initially had reservations about Full House, his decision to stick around was ultimately a wise one. The role propelled him to mainstream popularity, and even after several decades, he is still most recognized as Uncle Jesse. It is a testament to his talent that it is hard to imagine what the sitcom would have been without him. Stamos portrayed Jesse with a combination of emotional depth and charm, and his natural rapport with children, evident in his scenes with both Michelle and Stephanie, greatly contributed to his success.

While Bob Saget's character, Danny Tanner, was the father figure for Full House's three children, John Stamos' character, Uncle Jesse, was arguably the main lead of the show. Among the adult cast members, he had the most compelling character development, transforming from a carefree rocker to a dedicated family man. Unfortunately, Stamos has expressed that he would not reprise his role in any future Full House spin-offs, citing his reluctance to do so without Saget's involvement.
