Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Declan Rice sustained a back injury during the North London derby clash against Tottenham, adding to Arsenal's growing list of injury concerns. Jorginho, who replaced Rice at half-time, was responsible for conceding Spurs' equalizer in the thrilling 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium.
"He had a back injury," Arteta said of Rice. "He was really uncomfortable during the match, we had to take him out.
"We have to assess him. It's strange for someone like him to come off."
Arsenal are currently facing multiple setbacks with their key players. Jurrien Timber is already out due to a long-term knee problem, and they are now also missing Thomas Partey. Additionally, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli suffered injuries this week, further extending the list of absentees. Arteta acknowledged these challenges by highlighting the absence of five influential players in their recent match. Despite the adversity, the team had to give opportunities to other players due to the frequency of fixtures and the consistent stream of injuries.
Arsenal, currently trailing Manchester City by four points in the Premier League standings, have a Carabao Cup match against Brentford in midweek. This will be followed by their upcoming game against Bournemouth. Prior to the international break, Arsenal will face Lens in the Champions League before hosting Manchester City at the Emirates. Arteta expressed his disappointment, stating, "We feel like we dropped two points. We allowed two very poor goals. However, mistakes are an inevitable aspect of football and must be accepted."
For his part, Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou was delighted with his side after Heung-Min Son twice hit back to earn a point.
"Real pleased," he said. "They're a top side, a tough place to come.
The team's character and belief demonstrated the kind of team we aim to be. They continuously persevered, showing their determination.
The team's commitment and aspiration lie in becoming the team we desire, which requires discipline and embracing the team's values.
Postecoglou voiced his disappointment regarding the choice to penalize Cristian Romero's alleged handball for Bukayo Sako's penalty kick.
"We didn't have much luck today, with an unfortunate own goal and an unfortunate penalty," he stated.
"I think any clarity would be good. I have no idea what the rule is. I've seen all sorts of handballs given and not given."
